I've just been diagnosed with the onset of Osteo Arthritis in my shoulders and the base of my spine, I'm hoping there are herbal remedies/vitamins etc I can take to help rather than all the pain killers I've been on waiting to find out what it is..................

Any ideas ????

article in the daily mail yesterday a lady is taking cider vinegar ( i think ) and reckons she has cured it ..cant do any harm ..im a sufferer myself.... already had a new knee im going to try it .. try not to go down the pain killer route tho ...you could get addicted ...positive thoughts including meditation and plenty of excercise for me ..i gave up the painkillers 4 years ago

I heard that too!

Apparently....

Give 2 teaspoonfuls of apple cider vinegar and 2 of honey in a glass of water, taken at each meal. If this mixture is not accepted by the stomach at mealtimes it may be taken between meals.”

Use the cider vinegar and honey treatment for arthritis and also apply cider vinegar externally to painful joints. Local treatment can also be given by soaking the arthritic hand, or foot in a strong, comfortably hot solution of cider vinegar for ten minutes, two or three times a day - (a quarter of a cup of cider vinegar to one and a half cups of water).

Arthritic knees can be attended to by making a poultice - soak the cloth in a mixture of cider vinegar and water, (as per above mixture) wring out and wrap it around the joint, then secure with a dry cloth to retain heat. When the wet cloth cools, it should be wrung out in the hot solution and applied afresh. Repeat several times, twice daily.

I dunno about East Midland but here in Glasgow there's an excellent School of Herbal Medicine which teaches the herbalists you'll find in practice up and down the country.

Just like at the GP or hospital they need patients to help train students and run free clinics and prescribe medicines at cost price (often literally less than £1.00).

It might be worth tracking down anything similar local to you.

Hope it work out for you.

My frind runs the Herbal School in Glasgow

There's no medical proof that condroitin and glucosamine actually work but lots folk swear by it. Don't take it if ur diabetic btw or prone to fits.

Omega 3 and 6 definitely help tho there's a timelag between starting and effect

Targeted excerise is excellent but you need the help of a physio or good osteopath. Once pain eases a bit a good, properly traine Pilates or yoga teacher would definitely help.

One thing i'd say is DON'T give up painkillers if it's sore otherwise the pain becomes centralised and you get chronic pain. Current thinking is don't come off anti inflamms for at least one month.

Remember, arthritis waxes and wanes. It will get better

Should also say don't take chondroitin if have shellfish allergy!

And hands up, might have mixed up risk of triggering a fit with Oil of Evening Primrose. Ahh, age...I need some lecithin lol

Best advice, in our opinion...

And we dont mean to sound like your Mum!

Omega3 Glucosmine, Good diet....plenty of veg , fish, minimise red meat and dairy, blah blah blah....

Joking aside it sounds blase but it really can effect how you feel and you symptons.

There are a lot of good books out there on Health Promoting diets!

Oh and regular light exercise. Like Sex lol xx

Hope this helps

Creatine. It's a powder (don't bother with the tablets) that you mix with water and drink. Bodybuilders take it as, primarily, it helps 'bond' protein and water together to form muscle. I have Crepid Arthritis in my knees; when I was taking this they felt a lot more solid.

Just be careful with herbal remedies.

They can react with medicines hun.

Get some info on all before you take anything.

go onto one of the websites for arthritus for info.

Im a member of three and loads of info even dietary ,

Which plays a big part.

good luck

Gotta be careful with this herbal stuff.

Even though it's herbal, it can interfere with certain prescribed medications that you are currently taking ....

Try company called Natures Best. they have an online shop.

I take 2 x 1000mg tabs of Glucosamine and 2 x 1000mg tabs of Fish oil every day.

You can't OD on the stuff as your body takes what it needs and the left overs pass through your body. It's cheaper than the high street shops too. Costs me around £15 every 3 months if my memory serves me well.

You will be back doin doggy in no time

I don't know of any firm research on the matter but I've been told by a lad with a chemistry degree to watch out for glucasmine supplements, some are coated in seashell-derived coatings which can lead to a rise in your cholestrol.

My gran had reeeeeeeeeeeeal bad athritis and found some relief in butties with feverfew leaves, but she'd tried so much stuff by then it couldve been placebo effect.

You def CAN od on fish oil, esp cod liver oil. Vit A is stored by the body and xs will cause arthritis so be careful!

For something completely alternative you could get a piece of smoky quartz and charge it with absorbing the pain and rub it around the affected area 2 or three time a day. Smoky quartz is good for absorbing negative energies produced by pain. Just don't forget to earth it daily. Do this in tandem with your current treatment and it should help you.
