Politicians (and civil servants) do seem to be in season at the moment, but I'm intrigued as to why accountants, estate agents, and particularly teachers make the lis

It's misogynistic, wherw they don't hold themselves to the same standards I think it's used from the 1940s onwards. Perhaps returning soldiers were expecting a country of eager virgins to await their return?

I hate to break it to you, but in some societies speaking a woman's name in public meant that she'd made a spectacle of herself and brought humiliation on the family.

If they were lucky, they were Of husband, bearer of sons.
