near the sounds of the wimborne quarter jack!

Not on the same scale as Lee Rigby I know, but people of a certain age plus will have heard the name. Famous to those who used to watch the wrestleing on ITV on Saturdays in the days of Kent Walton commentating, Jackie Pallow, Vic Faulkner, Les Kellet and Co., th e wrestler Mick Mc Manus died yesterday aged 93 The final bell has rung!

R.I.P Mick.

Me and my dad used to love his 4pm battles on Saturday afternoon with his tag partner, the late Steve Logan, against the Royal brothers.

The Man You Love To Hate was great entertainment in simpler, happier times. R

I'd heard of him being well known during the days of Saturday afternoon wrestling, surprised to find he was 93, he couldn't have been a young man even in his competitive heyday! Just goes to show exercise is great for longevity

mick was a legend in the ring and a gent outside

used to have some good chats with him when i worked on the wrestling scene building the ring and being a second

he was one of the few to make it onto the usa wrestling hall of fame

A lot of the old wrestlers used to lie about their age so that they could continue wrestling.

Half the time they probably lost track of how old they were themselves.

Apparently Mick was a key part in the ITV Wrestling production, working hand in hand with the promoters/producers, arranging the matches etc. I seem to remember reading that he put a hell of a lot into raising the level of Wrestling, hence it became 'Professional Wrestling'. However its also said that Mick never lost a fight because it was fixed that way.

Still VERY entertaining, look up 'World of Sport Wrestling' on youtube,there is some really good stuff there

Great Saturday afternoons as a kid watching that lot. Still a "grapple fan" as Kent Walton used to put it, but WWE just doesn't have the magic of the 70s and 80s British small-hall scene.

the commentator was kent walton... seconds out round 2. Remember the public warnings?? and when the ref used to count out 1ahhh 2ahhh 3ahhh what was that all about lol,was only little at the time but my grand parents always had that on as my grandad used to do boxing and wrestling.

This thread has brought back great memories of my Nan and Grandad, going round there on a Saturday afternoon and watching my Nan shout at the telly wanting her favorites to win. And us grand kids wondering what the hell was going on.

My Grandad gave us an old ribbon tape recorder to play with and we recorded Nan and didn't tell her and played it back later in the day, it was really funny but we got a good clip around the head for doing it....

I remember being a kid watching the wrestling every Saturday afternoon with the added anticipation of waiting for the footy results wishing my would Dad announce we had 24 points from 8 score-draws and 2 no-score-draws on the coupon….

Mark "Rollerball" Rocco`s dad was Jumping Jim Hussey.

He could stand on a hanky and drop kick a guy, then land back on the hanky.

Had a pub in Kearsley called Man & Sythe, had many a great night in there (late 70s) with Stan Ogden who live a few doors up from the pub.

Mark used to look after the pub when his dad went on holiday.

When I worked in Camberwell I used to see him all the time: meticulously dressed with jet black hair.

Mick McManus.

Not many of you might recall that outside of the ring, his favourite pastime was collecting rare porcelain; apparently, he had one of the best collections in the UK and was a renowned expert in that field.

I also recall going to see a school chum of mine one Saturday afternoon, just as World of Sport's wrestling was on the telly. The most almighty appalling language was heard in the Lounge; there, sat my friend's Granny, in her 80's then, uttering the most awful phrases at the screen like, "rip his head off Mick, tear his eyeballs out, tear him apart limb from limb" and these were the printable ones!! She really got into it all!!

In his youth, my dad and 2 co-workers all had a billy two rivers mohican haircut done. On the monday morning, their manager made them walk through a room full of female secretaries who all had a good laugh at them!

I believe Mr Rivers went on to become a politician fighting for native Indian rights.

I used to like watching the deaf guy, I think his name was Alan Kilby or something similar. The ref had to sign when the bell went. He often fought with Big Daddy.

Favourite baddie was the guy in the green tights whose wife Princess Paula was part of the show. Was he called Dave 'fit' Finlay or am I getting confused in my old age lol

I remember the crybaby cyanide Sid cooper

The infamous feud and battles between Marty jones and Marc rollerball rocco. There was always blood spilled in those matches.

Strong man Alan dennison died in the ring, I think King Kong kirk and bruiser muir did too.

Anyone remember mick macmichael? The opposite of McManus, he never won a bout
