The longest battle of the 2nd World War will commerate it's 70th Anniversary on the River Mersey and in Liverpool over the Bank Holiday weekend, finishing with a flypast on Monday.

25 navel ships from the Royal Navy and from other countries including Germany, Canada and Russia will be in port over the weekend with many of them open for visitors. Liverpool was the hub of this battle with the headquaters hidden underground and is now a museum. Something like 35,000 Navy men and 36,000 Merchant Navy and 30000 German sailors plus 3500 merchant ships, 175 Navy ships and more than 780 U Boats were lost in the battle to get supplies to UK from USA, and the turning point of the battle was 1943 which is why the commerations are held this year.

I went to the one 10 years ago which was a spectacular sight so if the weathers good and your in NW England this weekend you may fancy popping along to The Mersey and seeing some of these boats.
