Just started to take up golf, anyone else a golf fan, any tips would be good, handicap is more than par where I’ve played on a nine hole course, think I need practice at driving range.

I’m taking up golf for the first time very soon. Scouring eBay for a half decent used set of clubs before I grab a few lessons. I’m told it helps to stop you from forming bad habits with the swing that will take ages to fix via lessons later.

Not that serious yet, I’m more worried about slicing the shot and hitting someone on the back of the head in a complete different direction to the way I’m aiming, phantom of the open comes to mind the way I play

Spending £100 on lessons is more beneficial than spending £ 500 on new equipment lol

Seriously though go see a local teaching pro, and learn the fundamentals. Practice chipping and putting more than the driver.

Golf can be a cruel mistress.. lol

1 shot a round.. you will hit it perfectly and think you are tiger woods… and the next shot you will shank it into the rough

If you are thinking of getting clubs…. As a novice I would suggest getting a used bag with every other club in it… so driver, 3i, 5i, 7i, 9i, wedge, putter… that way it teaches you distance and feel

I play to a fairly high level, but it takes a lot of hours practising to get there.

Every spare moment I used to be on the range or at the course.

Best pieces of advice I can give you… sacrifice the distance for accuracy and be sure to work twice as hard on your short game as any other part.

Drive for show, putt for dough

Best of luck fella

Get some lessons, stops you adopting bad habits from the start. Really hard game, just go and enjoy it. Don’t worry about anyone on the course, we’re all pretty crap lol

I absolutely love golf! It’s my competitive outlay ever since the knees and hips begged me to retire from hurling 😂

The one bit of advice that every beginner who wants to take it seriously needs is to get lessons, and more than one! You’ll realise in time that they’re invaluable. Aside from that, always go one club more than you think. I’m telling you now that you will rarely if ever overshoot the green at the beginning 😂

Already booked my lessons.

The pro shop has a guy that specialises with brand new players. Helping them to build the beginnings of a solid swing.

Good job. In my first lesson, I didn't even hit any balls...just purely worked on the swing.

My other piece of advice is not to get carried away with the equipment side of things until you're comfortable with your swinging and then you'll be better placed to know what feels right to you.

And why does everything I've written feel like a euphemism???

Golf is an absolutely fantastic game, a great laugh and a way to meet up with friends. If you enjoy it ,play it as much as you can, 1 tour level shot per round will keep you coming back for more, most of all enjoy it

I had that once, years ago. It was a peach of a 5wood off the turf, to within 4ft of the pin. Pity id hit a dozen shots to get to that point on a par 5

That’s what’s made me wanna take it up again.

Agree with a lot of the comments on here ...

Lessons from local Pro

2nd hand clubs for start will be fine

Chipping and putting is key

Practice practice and practice

Great social whether its for a cuppa or beers

Snap!

I would seriously get lesson and practice.

The pro who gives us lessons also let's us use there practice field whenever it's free and the driving range is good. But also the trackman simulators are good they give a lot of useful information.
