revolting rhymes.. when i was reading it a few years back i too thought 'oh dear '

When I'm doing revolting rhymes with the kids I don't stop at that point. If it was acceptable 20 years ago when the word crap was considered a swear word that you would hear before the watershed then its acceptable now.

Always remember as a kid we sniggered watching Captain Pugwash when he mentioned crew member Master Bates, my mum used to leave the room when it was on.

But times change, if my daughter came home saying the word 'slut' because her teacher had said it i would be writing in a pretty strong complaint.

yes but your daughter is 3, revolting rhymes is aimed for kids who are older. It shouldn't be read to children under about 10.

you're right, master Bates, seaman staines & Roger the cabin boy were all urban myths started in a student rag mag & were never characters in captain pugwash.

perhaps im a little OTT but i think id still have words with my daughter if at the age of 15 she came home and said 'slut'

i just wouldn't find it acceptable language for a young person to use. Each to their own though

In that case I imagine you'll be ensuring your daughter doesn't read Shakespeare?

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

I think young people should know words like slut in context. They will hear them anyway in derogatory ways and I prefer them to understand the original meaning and how the author is using it.

One of my bugbears is adults casually swearing in the street.

Cute, the point about your daughter as a young adult using a word like slut is not lost; no doubt she will use it and others at some point but not in front of the parents. After all, this is what most of us did and continue to follow that convention.

Incorrect! Master bates pugwash and seaman Staines were indeed all characters in captain pugwash. The cabinboy character was in fact called Tom

No, urban legend I'm afraid. The author of Pugwash sued some newspapers when they printed this story.

Sorry to be a pedant but here is the full lust of characters

Captain Pugwash

Master Mate

Barnabas

Willy

Tom the Cabin boy

Cut-Throat Jake

Jonah

Governor of Portabello

Maggie Lafayette

Swine

Stinka

Lieutenant Scratchwood

As you can see the rudest name is a tame Willy.
