Wild Border Country of Herts & Middx/West London !

So folks, it all now starts for real.

Are you off anywhere over the weekend ? What are your hopes for the season ? More importantly, what are your realistic expectations for the season ?

As you know, I'm a sad git who watches far more football than any sane person should, primarily at Vicarage Road & Craven Cottage, though I'll happily gravitate to venues such as Brisbane Road, The Den, Adams Park or Loftus Road.

For Watford....well you can simply never tell with the Championship. Of the three teams which came down, I'd perhaps fancy Ipswich to be the strongest outfit (but then again everyone said that about Luton last year). New management and new players at The Vic, the Saturday-Tuesday-Saturday-Tuesday slog of the Championship....personally I bloody love it ! Of course like all fans, I'll be hoping Watford can maybe challenge for the play-offs. But realistically, it'll probably be another mid-table season.

It's time Fulham stepped up another notch. I do feel they wasted an opportunity for possible European football last season. Away record was better than it was at home, seven wins, five draws and seven defeats needs sharpening up. They need to be looking for ten, eleven, maybe twelve home wins. And if Palace can win a Cup, then Fulham should be aiming for one too.

Speaking of the Cup....the F.A. variety. Most football fans only seem to think it starts in January, but those of us who know non-league football will tell you differently. There are a couple of localish (but not local enough to be of interest) ties tonight. Tomorrow, I shall be heading a few miles down the road to Northwood v. Egham in the extra preliminary round. Plenty of other local teams have away matches tomorrow, so I shall be keeping my eyes open for any drawn matches, and possible replays (which they still have in qualifying rounds) for Tuesday.

Anyway, feel free to chip in here with your observations and opinions, keep the banter clean & civilised. If you're heading out anywhere over the weekend, safe travels and enjoy your game.

Absolutely can't wait for the season to start! I'm a Sheff United fan and Mr is a Manchester United fan, so it hasn't been a brilliant couple of years 😂

Though I was grateful not to get promoted in all honesty. It's nice watching games we can compete it and I'm not ready for another year of Premier League spankings. Much prefer the spanking in the bedroom thank you very much!

Try to get to Sheffield at least a few times to watch live as well and it's more fun knowing you're making the trip with a chance of winning. Being in the Championship also means I get to go Deepdale in the away end and that's always good fun!

Bring it on!

When Watford were last in Prem four years ago, they won two, drew two and lost fifteen games at home - where was the fun in that ? (Well, actually given that one of those home wins was a 4-1 battering of Manchester United.....)

The ONE thing I would like to see instituted in the Championship is an away price cap like there is in the Premier League. Not that I'm inclined to go to too many Watford away games anyway (I'd sooner find something else in London) but I won't consider it on point of principle if the ticket price is more than £30. Don't get that it can be more expensive to watch an away game in the Championship than the Prem.

I AM going to Watford's away opener at Charlton next week, ticket price was £28. Indeed, as it's a 12.30 ko, I'm "double headering" next Saturday as Fulham host Eintracht Frankfurt in a friendly at 5pm. (Am also going to Brentford v. Borussua Moenchengladbach friendly on Friday evening).

Yeah it can be absurd. Getting us all to a game can be a nightmare so as a family we've started aiming to visit all the stadiums in the English football league. Makes it much easier to go to a random game at a much more reasonable price! Wherever we are there's usually something near by but getting everyone to Old Trafford is basically a pipedream. It's easily a few hundred pound and that's before anything like food etc, can't justify it.

Especially not when they get battered every week as well 😂😂

So yeah, hoping for a better season for both of us because our house has had too many weekends ruined by football in the last couple of years lol. Would love to get down to Watford, heard good things about the atmosphere. Palace hugely appeals too!

Enjoy it while it lasts ,,, remember not to jump up and down if your team scores and the referee points to the centre circle ,,, you have to wait until the opposition kicks off again , probably a good few minutes later ,, ,

Arsenal ST holder here.

Two games at the Emirates this week and then I’m off to the Theatre of Wet Dreams for the curtain raiser against Yanited.

Feeling optimistic about the season. Still need to see some outgoings and two possibly three signings but a lot of positives going into the season, even if some sections of the fan base refuse to recognise it.

Good to see Leagues 1 and 2 as well as the FA Cup getting underway today.

Casual with my football even if yes, there's teams I support in Manchester United & (of more precedence given EFL starts this weekend) Shrewsbury Town who host Bromley this weekend.

Taken a scoreline bet on the latter of Town winning 2-1 @ 8-1 with my bookie after hearing a pal's prediction but that'll be money lost

Northwood 0 Egham 1 in the F A Cup today. Tight first half where Northwood hit the base of the post and Egham had header cleared off line being best chances.

Egham much the better team in second half, could even afford the luxury of a missed penalty, but deservedly through. Will be having a scour through other results later to see if it's thrown up an local replays midweek

Barton Rovers are an example of an excellently run non league side. A relatively small village in Beds, they have a series of pitches along the road on the way to their ground. All the youth teams playing there do so under the name of Barton Rovers. All money made by the youth set up goes upwards to fund the men’s team, which has been holding its own for years in the Sourhern Football League Division One Central. This is why they regularly finish higher than a certain team in the same league that has a population of circa 80k. (Parents of Buckinghamshire’s county town, please take note of the good people of Barton and stop being so precious. Help to financially support the club under whose banner your children play and help them not get beaten 1-0 in an FA Cup extra preliminary round tie by a team from a place near Bicester I have never heard of).

Really looking forward to our first trip to your gaff in 8 years.

Hope you enjoy your season, suspect you will be glad to get back to the Championship. As someone mentioned above, you now have the delights of VAR. It’s soul destroying.

Hopes for the season:

West Ham - 9th/10th place would be very good and a decent cup run. Looking forward to seeing some of the Academy players establishing themselves in the squad. Nirvana would be Sullivan and Brady fucking of out the Club.

Hartlepool United - playoffs and Raj Singh to sell up ASAP.

Aylesbury United- to find 4 worse teams than us in the league. I suspect there’s more chance of finding a solution to the Middle East conflict and ending poverty and starvation.

My beloved friends at Tottenham Hotspur FC - finishing one place lower than last season and an irritating rash around the groin that keeps you awake at night 🥰.

Was hoping to catch a Step 5 game tonight but I’m a tad unwell so resting up as I’m at Arsenal for the friendly against Villarreal tomorrow.

A 6pm kick off which won’t be ideal but I should be able to swing work and make it. On the plus side I won’t be home super late which is always a positive

I'm taking in Brentford's friendly with Borussia Moenchengladbach on Fri night.

Lost manager, lost captain, lost main striker, 'rookie' manager, other players sulking. If you're Brentford, you'd take 17th place now.

Bristol City Fan here for my sins haha!!

After reaching the play offs last year there will be certain expectations but with the change of manager it’s abit of an unknown tbh! Watched a few friendlies and it looks like will be playing with a very high press so expect us to catch a few teams out who like to play out from the back.

Championship very strong this year so would be happy with a top ten finish! Regardless how they are doing I’ll be there home and away!

Hope all you fans out there enjoy the ride and have a fantastic season making memories that can last a lifetime

Wrexham fan here of over 40 years and yes, I'm enjoying the current ride!

I have literally no idea how we will fare in the championship but I will be happy with a mid table finish if I'm honest.

We've bought some good players imo but whether it's enough?

Away at Southampton Saturday, can't see anything but a brutal welcome to second tier life....

Made a few 'random visits' to Ashton Gate over last couple of years, had an aunt in Newport to whom I was next of kin and spent last couple of years of her life in care (she's gone now), so once a month or so I would stay at her house, check post etc, visit her, and if there was a game either on my way in or as heading home I'd stop off.

I can just about remember Bristol City in Div. 1 at the end of the 1970's. Potential for them if they were ever to get up would be amazing, stadium is certainly ready, great catchment area.

[PS, great to see more fans from different clubs chipping in. Keep 'em coming !]

Saw the replay tonight Barton 2 Loughborough 1 , similar pattern to the 1st game Loughborough on top 1st half , Barton in 2nd half

Think ( almost certain) this is first time I have seen a FA Cup game and then the replay played on the same ground

Can't imagine it happened too many times , probably if teams ground sharing and drawn against each other

(Heard tonight that there is a sink hole in Loughborough pitch hence the need for original game to be changed to Barton)

Cracker of a game at Harefield.

Peacehaven took the lead on four minutes from a cheaply given away penalty, and were better team in early stages. Harefield equalised midway through half, but Peacehaven regained lead just before the break, 1-2 HT.

Harefield back on level terms very early in 2nd half. Were far superior for rest of game, bur Peacehaven defence held firm..2-2 HT

Game went into extra 30 mins. Just before break in extra time, Harefield edged their noses in front, right move neatly finished off and timing pefect. And that proved to be enough. Harefield 3 Peacehaven 2 (aet)

I’ve seen West Ham play both Farnborough and Aldershot in the FA Cup at Upton Park, where we were initially the away team, then the home team in the replay.

Only beat Farnborough 2-1 in the replay. I’ve seen Aylesbury United beat them by a bigger score line in the FA Cup 🤣.

Wild Border Country of Herts & Middx/West London !

The Football Association put a block on the straight switching of venues after Farnborough were drawn at home to Arsenal in 2003 and went to Highbury. If that tie was drawn out now, Farnborough would have the option of going to a bigger 'host' ground (I guess Reading would be the nearest ?), but couldn't totally concede home advantage . Only game I've ever been to like that would have been Windsor v. Brentford in 1st Round, switched to Griffin Park in 1982. Was odd watching Brentford wear sky blue at home. Game finished 7-0.

There USED to be an archaic ruling that if colours clashed in the F.A. Cup BOTH teams would change. There's a horrendous example of this in the F.A. Cup 6th Round in 1973. Derby played Leeds at the Baseball Ground so both clubs changed. Game was covered by Match of the Day, and at that point, NOT all their highlights appeared in colour. Derby played in royal blue, Leeds wore all red. Find the highlights on the net, and see if you can distinguish them !

There have been a couple of interesting kit changes were finals were concerned. Rather than toss a coin for colours, QPR & Spurs mutually agreed to both wear away kits in 1982.

There WAS a toss for colours in 1980 which West Ham won, but they opted to stick to the all-white they wore in the semi-final with Everton. Arsenal's "no mix & match" policy at the time meant they wore yellow & blue in 1980, though they COULD have worn red shorts with their home shirts. In fact Arsenal lost the toss for colours in 1978 and 1979 too (though again, they could have worn red shorts in 1978, but opted for yellow/blue).

In theory both clubs should have changed when Arsenal met Liverpool in 1971 (as they did in 1950, Arsenal wearing gold shirts/white shorts, Liverpool in white/black), but given most television sets we're still black and white, yellow/blue/yellow v. white/black/white would have been hard to distinguish, hence Liverpool wearing all red.

The 1979 semi-final saw Liverpool switch to a "3rd kit" of all yellow while Manchester United played in white & black.

Oddest kit combo I've ever seen was first time I went to Watford, New Year's Day 1985, v. Liverpool. At this time, Watford's home kit was yellow shirts/red shorts & socks. Liverpool's away kit was all yellow, but they couldn't really get away with wearing red/yellow/yellow. So Liverpool dug out a set of black shorts from the previous away kit, and turned out at Vicarage Road in red shirts/black shorts/yellow socks to provide a bit of contrast. (They wore that combo in three successive seasons at The Vic, May 1983, March '84, & Jan '85. Problem was solved when Liverpool switched to Adidas as kit supplier in the summer of 1985, and reverted to all white for an away kit)

Sorry, am I being a bit of an anorak......

Wild Border Country of Herts & Middx/West London !

A more straightforward cup replay tonight. Southall 3 Little Common 0.

The hosts took control with two goals in four minutes midway through first half. Wasn't until closing minutes that they added third goal. Six or seven would not have flattered them.

That's it until the weekend, when I have three games inside 24 hours ! Brentford v. Borussia Moenchengladbach on Friday evening, Charlton v. Watford at 12.30 pm on Sat, which allows more than enough time to get back for Fulham v. Eintracht Frankfurt at 5 pm.

Who's headed where this weekend ?
