Only You ?

I suppose this is a thread about music, memory…and melancholy and nostalgia (please forgive men, I'm Welsh !)

Two versions of Only You — same song, different ghosts.

One is Alison Moyet, live at the Burberry show in 2016 — pared back, raw, beautiful. A woman who’s lived, singing a song that’s lived with her.

The other, The Flying Pickets, Christmas 1983 — a cappella, eerie, utterly unforgettable. That version always takes me straight back.

I still picture it: the rugby club, the clatter of pint glasses, my dad with his mates, i was really young. That song playing in the background. And yes — I’m almost sure it snowed that Christmas in Wales.

I love Alison's versions, I really do, But I can’t pretend I’m not biassed. That Flying Pickets version is tied to some of the most heartfelt memories I have of my dad. my little time machine. (along with Toto's 'Africa')

So — which version is yours?

And where does it take you?
