"Nineteen Eighy-Four. Just started it and it's as intense as I've heard about. A really good read so far." It really is a genuine classic. It changes the way you look at the world. Of course, now so much is derivative of it, but it retains its power.

"Nineteen Eighy-Four. Just started it and it's as intense as I've heard about. A really good read so far." I've read this so many times over the years. It gets more and more insightful as I get older and so the world as it is. Read Fahrenheit 451 after!

I've heard of parallels made between the book and now so looking forward to seeing what those could potentially be.

"Just finished the Dune books Halfway through How We Fish (Paul Whitehouse) Not sure what to read next… most of this years reads have been heavy going so far before the two… something nice and light next I think!" Dune books. Wow. Heavy read those. I love Frank Herbert but his books were so in depth. Especially the universe he created. It reminded me of Tolkien's works.

Very heavy going but worth the perseverance! Definitely reminiscent of Tolkien’s world building and Herbert must have used as many words to describe sand as Tolkien did to describe… well everything 😂

"Nineteen Eighy-Four. Just started it and it's as intense as I've heard about. A really good read so far." It's brutal and philosophical and stays with you a long time. I've read it twice and listened to it several times. Always thought provoking. There was a sequel released a few years ago by the brilliant author Sandra Newman called Julia. It looks at the same events from Julia's point of view. I was sceptical, but it's wonderful. Well worth a read.

"Derek Jarman, 'Smiling in slow motion', lovely, tragic, happy and sad." I never knew he wrote books. If I'm honest, I can't say I love his films (except War Requiem), but they were always intriguing and he seemed such a thoughtful, genuine man. This is going straight on my wishlist - thanks for posting.

"Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro. 3rd time reading it now" What a book!! I think I might be due a re-read. Many books set up a moral or philosophical conundrum, but then kop out. This drops you right into the middle of one and sees it through without flinching. Beautiful writing by Ishiguro.

"Still only half way through Fevre Dream by George R.R Martin. I got side tracked by other things and haven't picked it up for a month or so. I do love a gothic vampire novel though and was enjoying it. " If you like vampire books have you seen Jay Kristoff - Empire of the Vampire. I'd say possibly more fantasy than gothic but I enjoyed it. The 2nd book of the trilogy not long out.
