Words wot I hate part 1: fun

Wimbledon

The (over)use of this word bothers me and I am not sure why so - permit me to think out loud.

It is monosyllabic and reflects the dumbing down of communication.

It is the kind of insipid word that people use to justify really heinous acts like.. say kicking someones head in during a brawl *just a bit of fun* or violating someones boundaries or personal space *just a bit of fun*

It can be a bit of a gaslighty word...

It is also a bit too vague and generic;the amount of profiles that describe fun people looking for fun.

I looked up the etymology because I am as pretentious as I seem and it actually comes from a Middle English word (fon) once used to describe a cheat or a hoax or a fool.

Go figure.

Other words which leave me cold include but are not limited to *hot* to describe attractiveness and *vibes* to describe.. well I am not really sure what that word describes to be honest.

I prefer the term larks... as in *what larks!* but I doubt it will catch on.

. I hate the overuse of the word-literally.

Love this thread, it's such fun.

There are a few words I'm not too keen on. Meet as in "have a meet".

I'm not sure why I'm not keen on it but it doesn't work.

Playdate when describing two or more adults meeting.

Banter. The word, the behaviour it commonly describes now.

Shenanigans - it makes me cringe, which is another word I don’t like

Pacific - when they can’t say specific

Sloppy - 🤢

I don't mind so much if the slang word is shorter than the actual word, but I do get bothered when they are the same length like wuz - why not just use was?

Anyone using "banter" or "bants" should be castrated to stop the breeding line and I'll die merrily on that hill. I too use larks.

I don't know what skibidi is but that can sod right off.

Using the word well as a replacement for very bugs me also. As in "well fit" instead of very attractive.

Central

Some good choices here

Though I'm guilty of using 1, occasionally 2 of them . Probably not the worst examples.

Similarly to abbreviated words that are no shorter etc then the original, is an unnecessary replacement that's longer and more syllables

Going forwards, is beaten hands down by in future
