Cold callers at your door

Am I the only one who thinks this pratice should stop?

I live on my own and I get them quite regularly. I really don't like it. Some can be really pushy and intimidating. I know some of my elderly neighbours have been convinced to buy from unscrupulous people and regretted it.

I know you can just not open your door but sometimes genuine people like my neighbours knock on my door randomly. I also don't want to be a hermit! 🤣

How do you feel about it?

To me, if they go door to door, just means they’re desperate for work & probably don’t have good reviews

"I never answer my door unless it’s to the postman or my friends"

I have become a lot more cautious about answering my door now because of this.

"I don't answer the door. Even though they can clearly see me going about my business through the window."

The trouble is I can't see who they are unless I open the door. My neighbours do pop round so it's tricky do I or don't I?

Camera doorbells are good for that.

Get a Ring doorbell or similar, its great you can see who's at the door from your phone and ignore them or go and answer if you're intrigued. I've had people walk up, see the door bell and walk away as they know they'll be recorded.

I’ve had cold callers bang on the window when I was working from home. They didn’t get a warm reception.

We have a neighbourhood watch thing set up and each street had to agree before they put up signs on streetlamps warning others that cold callers are not welcome in our neighbourhood. Some of my grumpy neighbours have reported the one or two that still attempt it (who do they report it to??) I've just gently said to anyone that still knocks on my door to sell things that this isn't the neighbourhood for it, and to expect some aggro if they continue with it.

I understand and thank you for your suggestion.

However I'm not concerned for my safety as such I just think it's about time it was illegal to do it.

If I want services I will ask for them.

Plus there are a lot of vulnerable people out there and they shouldn't be bothered by it.

Hence my suggestion up thread about a big old notice on the door. I can't remember where we got ours, possibly on line .

Thanks but I live in a quiet neighbourhood and I wouldn't think the financial investment was worth it.

I just really think legally they should be stopped from coming to your door.

I think it should be easier to blanket ban them from areas, with tougher penalties for breaking it.

Sorry, but I don't have the patience for it. If they come knocking, I just send them on their way straightaway. It is a little invasive. I know they're just doing their job but they need to get the message and I make sure I let them know straightaway

Get a doorbell camera , one where you can speak to them first before you go to the door?

Can check who it is first then.

I tend not to buy. But I do accept some are just trying to earn a living and I have nothing but admiration for them. I have a sign saying no cold callers but some do read it some don't.

Some guys who come wanting to look at roof or driveway or tree trimming, I tell them I'm a builder, although I'm not,and that does tend to stop them but some cheeky bastards still try it on. A polite no thanks, usually works.

I have a Google NEST video doorbell which is indispensable. It helps me to filter for whom I need to open the door (neighbours, delivery, grocery etc) and cold callers.

I try to check who's at the door first but sometimes Im preoccupied or one of the other gremlins here will open it. I just tell them no and close the door. Im not polite enough to listen to their spiel. Like you, if I wanted their services, I'd contact them. The stickers mentioned above can work but I know loafs of people with them on their door and the cold callers regularly ignore them. I think they should be banned too personally, they are a nuisance.

I recall one particularly rude man trying to get me to change my broadband over. Just literally wouldn’t take no for an answer. I just ignore nowadays, video doorbell is indispensable.

I agree that it is an outdated practice and concerns me in winter when they come round in the dark.

They’re so annoying the charity ones do my head in as they try and make you feel guilty if you don’t sign up. I try and ignore them but they always seem to come when I think it’s Amazon delivering something and find save the squirrels or a Johova at the door and not the boots I’ve just ordered from Amazon!

A no cold caller sign on our door stops nearly all of them.

The ones which ignore get the standard ‘we don’t accept cold callers’. Door is then closed. If you’re feeling particularly passive aggressive you can just tap the sign.

I straight up tell people I'm not interested, and don't sign up for anything on my doorstep.

My most humorous recent experience was recently opening the door to run an errand, to be confronted by JWs about to knock. I was unshaved, head to toe in black, sunglasses, boots and a Sisters of Mercy t-shirt. "No thanks", I said, "I'm Catholic". 😂🧛🏻‍♀️

Generally if I don't know who they are or I'm not expecting anyone then I just ignore them. I have also called down from a bedroom window to see what they want, that way they know someone is home. I personally believe door to door solicitation should be illegal. Its my right to feel safe and not engage with people if I choose. I have many ways of protecting myself in my own home if needed, so I feel safe and secure in my home.

I open the door.

If it's not my postie or a courier with something I'm expecting, or a friend or neighbour.....as soon as they tell me who they are and why they're there I close it again.

I don't even speak to them. I feel no guilt.

I used to keep a supply of NHS info leaflets on blood transfusions just inside the door especially for the JW's, but they seem to have stopped knocking now.......🤷‍♂️

I fucking hate the cunts especially as they have a habit of knocking when you are eating your tea,if whatever they are selling was worth having they wouldn’t be having to knock on doors trying to sell it

I ignore knocks at the door 99% of the time all of my mates just open the door and shout through so I know it’s them, but on the odd occasion I’m caught out by them as soon as they start speaking I’ll just say naaa in loud exaggerated fashion and shut the door they tend to get the hint

We had a border collie years ago that would scare them away, she wasn't nasty, she growled and sounded annoyed as I stopped from getting to them to play with them. But I made out that I was struggling to keep hold of her, thry had better run before she gets free.

It worked everytime, the dog got a treat afterwards as well

Ring Camera preset messages are just the best. You can record a few audio responses that you can quickly choose from in "Live View" should someone "ring" the doorbell. The person ringing the cam can't immediately tell if what they are hearing is pre-recorded or live.

My personal favourite is the one I created using the sounds of a chainsaw coupled with horrific screaming sounds. A couple of seconds in I'm yelling "FUCK! SHIT! GO GRAB THEM, QUICK!"

We had a sign as students we "borrowed" off hilarious 90's satirical soap Stella Street...

I think it put many a caller off as we stopped getting hardly any after!

Best thing to do is to put up a sign saying -

1. Instant £50 initial charge for my inconvenience

Same. I don't answer the door unless I am expecting it. I don't think cold calling people on the doorstep should be allowed, same as on the telephone. It's basically bullying/manipulating people.
