Why do supermarkets use to much plastic?

From the land of haribos.

Is it just me or do you also think that supermarkets uses way to much plastics on their food? I am always supriced when I come to the veg aisle where most of it is wrapped in in to much plastic, not just veg but on other products too.

Here is an interesting fact, did you know that plastic packaging makes up 46% of all plastic waste and too much of it is ending up polluting our environment.

It would be interesting to see why you think they need to wrap it up in plastic, do you agree with it or not? I dont, could it be so that they can sell it for a cheaper price than without it, could this be a case of profit vs morality too?

Then they charge you 50p or whatever or a plastic bag. Everything I just bought was encased by you in plastic!

I seem to be the only one who finds this strange.

I try and buy non plastic wrapped fruit and veg. I find I just get enough for what I can eat and sometimes it works out cheaper.

I just put it in my basket and pay for it. Of course at home I wash the veg and fruit that needs it.

I hate all the unnecessary plastic waste, my bf does call me tree hugger but hey x

It's disgusting the volume of single use plastic used in packaging. It will often be to increase profits, by extending the time it's saleable. Greed.

There's a global plastics convention in Geneva next month, under the UN. Petrostates, like UAE are heavily influential, to sustain production and ignore the waste, as someone else's problem. Oil producers have too much power

It's because no government will have the bollocks to ban single use plastics.

Yes they do. You don't get it in other countries. The UK supermarket use of plastics is so high. I would much prefer everything loose.

Stop buying it then.

Stop complaining start voting.

Incidentally the plastic packaging is to save the food from damage during packing , transport, unpacking, shelf loading and purchase...

Just start liking damaged food and all the plastic can be done away with.

Pretty much this! People want loose products but panic and won't buy it if its slightly bruised in transit.

Paper bags of bread but if its ripped cos its not strong enough.. people won't buy it

Plastic is a b1tc# but its there to protect foods during transportation and to help consumers buy the product.

If youre that strong against the idea then theres always an option to grow your own? I grow herbs and the odd veggie

Unrelated, but I just realised you can buy a toilet brush and use it as a back scratcher - mind blown

I have a back brush for that. Is your toilet brush circular with bristles all round ? Cos you could do two back at once ...

I work in the food industry supplying supermarkets. Some are better than others but there is also a huge amount of plastic packaging used that does not make it to the customer facing areas
