When is it ok - if ever - to break a promise? Intention is ever so light-hearted but you can reply in a serious manner without being shot

The land of grey peas and bacon

Promises are comfort to a fool...

I don't make promises as I don't want to break them.

If when you made the promise it was heartfelt and thought possible to follow through, and if unforeseen circumstances prevented you from keeping it

Similar thoughts from you guys so far - nobody wants to disappoint and I include myelf here. I try not to promise anything I cannot keep either and this was always really important when I raised my children. But it is still important to me as it is about trust.

Mind you, I promised myself something a week ago and I broke my own promise

Sometimes life changes and so you dont have a choice.

Never promise the kids/grand kids anything you are not 100% sure of keeping though.

I guess when it becomes the kinder gesture….

For instance a mother promising her child the doctors needle won’t hurt…

A nurse did that to one of mine when he was 4 - I have a healthy respect for the profession but she lied to him and he had a needle phobia for many many years.

I also try not to make promises.... just in case. There can always be a good reason fr breaking one though. I told my niece I would take her out for the day.... we made a date, my Dad was taken into hospital to be cut almost in half to have a cancerous tumour and kidney taken out on that day as they had a cancellation...... even at 8, my niece knew I wasnt just fobbing her off with an excuse as to why I couldnt take her out

We all break promises, regardless of what we claim.

Its the sincerity behind the gesture and the concern for the promised party that matter in the end.

"When is it ok - if ever - to break a promise? Intention is ever so light-hearted but you can reply in a serious manner without being shot"

As the saying goes; 'The road to hell is paved with good intentions.'

I try never to make promises unless I am certain I can keep them. I'm almost manic about it. Most of the time I say, 'I can't promise, but I will do my best'.

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

I promise means nothing until it is delivered.

I take promises seriously so don't make them lightly and seldom break them. Don't make them if you don't mean them.
