is the most expensive slice of cake you have seen in a high street cafe or tea room? I don't mean Claridges or The Ritz

So far for us it's £5:40p.

Yeah desserts are about £7:50 to £12 in an ordinary restaurant.

I always reckoned cake was about £3:75

Chocolate fudge cake in the Marstons restaurant by me, is £8.25. I stopped going there since it changed brewery ownership.

Tell me about it. It use to be reasonable priced for a meal in there, but there's a huge housing complex for the over 50s currently being built opposite the restaurant. Since the planning was approved, prices have been creeping up.

There has been a steep rise in the price of cake. I'm laughing at myself even typing that 🤦🤣. I was just wondering why and maybe it's targeting the grey pound 🤔

What on earth was wrong with the signature Anton Mosimann pastry I bought for you at Claridges???

Blimey!

I haven't noticed an increase in the price of raw ingredients. Could it be wages have increased? 🤔.

God could I have thought of a less interesting thread topic? I doubt it, sorry everyone

Nothing really but my tears made it rather salty. I don't take rejection well...

Dubai & Nottingham

Don’t know the exact prices but it really shocked me returning to the UK this year how expensive coffee and cake is in general, it’s around £10 out in the Peak District.

I used to get Chai(Karak tea) and cake in Dubai for less than £1

Around 8-9 for a slice of cake. It was big though, enough to share between two people who like a good portion each

Same with coffee really. Is it justified nearly a fiver for a coffee, no. They charge what they like. We need to take to the streets demanding a fair price for our coffee and cake

The mark up on espresso is insane! However I now can’t stand instant coffee 😫

It is more in tourist areas. We usually pay less than £15 for coffee and cake unless we're right in the seafront where it's more.

£8 to £9? That's quite a lot but if it's enough for two.

Just a minute I'll get my marker pen out and make a placard

I understand that overheads and wages need to be factored in of course, I don't expect something for nothing but current prices seem high to me

I'm not a fan of instant, I use to know a woman who refused to call it coffee and just referred to it as Nescafé regardless of brand . She was elderly when I knew her in the 70s one of the last of her kind

Profiteering. If the government added a 1p in the pound tax the country would be up in arms. When very rich companies posting profits in the billions add the equivalent of 20p in the pound to their profit margin we grumble a bit and carry on. We're funny things us humans.

I suppose we can see the prize in front of us in the form of cake.

Improved services etc isn't an immediate gain.

This is something I should be all over given my love of cake

Generally, I just buy them irrespective of the cost. There is a garden centre in Droitwich that does charge the earth for cakes!

When did we start needing refreshment while buying a garden rake? 🤔

It's rare we eat cake when we're out. I am a master baker, if I do say so myself , and I won't pay silly money for something that probably tastes better at home.

We need evidence of this claim, what time should I be over for cake? I’ll happily bring tea to go with it

.

It's not quite cake - the only cakes they do are vegan and nutty and cardboard looking ; death for me.

But my favourite local independent coffee shop do amazing cinnamon buns. For £6. For one.

£6.

One cinnamon bun.

It pains me. They do an incredible iced strawberry matcha though.

If you have that skill no shop made cake will ever come up to scratch.
