Is it worth it? I mean....there's plenty of sports that you're better off watching from home on TV. 🤔

F1. You're sat in a fixed position, watching for a fraction of a second cars whizz past 60 odd times. And then nothing.

Golf. You watch someone swing a golf bat, hit a ball and then it flies off to somewhere you can't see it land.

Snooker. You'll have shit angle and won't see much of the game.

Darts. Sure, it might be a good piss up, but without binoculars you'll be watching where the darts land on a fuck off big screen anyway.

Women's Beach Volleyball. Cracking one out on site will likely see you arrested.

Surely you see more of a sport's action from the comfort of your sofa, with a fridge full of drinks nearby, a loo you don't have to walk miles away to use and maybe a handy box of tissues at hand?

Is it really worth paying a fortune for tickets just for the 'atmosphere'? 🤔

I went to my first pro golf tournament a few years ago, and in my view it’s better to be there than watch on tv, but it depends on what you want to get out of it. My son and I tend to follow a favourite player around rather than stay in one spot and watch all the players come through. It gives a lot of insight into how they play and think their way around the course. The atmosphere is generally good and you get to talk to your fellow spectators. Can be tricky when it is very crowded though.

The sports you highlight are generally better on TV but it's still worth going to a big golf tournament or F1 at least once to really appreciate them. For example, the speed F1 cars go at cannot truly be appreciated on TV alone.

And there's obviously loads and loads of sports that are better in person. Football obviously, not just for the atmosphere but for seeing the whole game too. I know from personal experience that people who regularly watch football in person have a much better tactical understanding of the game because they can see the full pitch and not the limited amount you see on TV as it follows the ball around. The same is true of many other sports.

Yeah. You can see all of the match in tennis. That's one that's worth it.

Same with football, rugby etc.

But anyone that says they go down to watch the Oxford vs Cambridge boat race for anything other than a piss up is lying......😂😂

As for watching F1, the track you pick and your location on the circuit also matters. In Austria you can pick few grandstands where you will see nearly 50% of the track. In 2022 it was cheaper to camp there for the weekend plus euro tunnel tickets than going to Silverstone for the weekend. The atmosphere was incredible, 4 days of continuous partying. My god the Dutch were party animals . I managed to touch the 3rd place trophy, don’t think you get that watching the sky coverage.

I think footie is definately better in person although I would not travel abroad to watch it. F1 is much better on tv having spoken to someone who has been to the British Gp. I'd like to do Monaco though for the experience.

Atmosphere is much better at the Rugby, can drink in the stand and home and away fans sit together. Then go out drinking with them afterwards to discuss the game

Being to two football games, couple of rugby games, gaelic football, baseball and American football.

Wildest atmosphere without a doubt was American football

I'm a motorsports man.

Whilst I agree you get more options of view from a tv.

I personally think in person is a better experience.

I used to marshal for Vintage bikes and sidecars.

While it would be great to see the whole of the circuit via a tv.

You don't get the experience of the true noise and thunder as they roar past you.

Exactly the same as British Truck Racing. I love going to Donnington to watch that.

The experience is what it is about for me.

I love watching sports live. I was raised on it. I love the atmosphere, being part of a crowd chanting the same things, cheering our teams on.

But I'm with you, there are certain sports that would be dull to watch in person. They are usually the sports I wouldn't want on telly either though.

There is a difference from example watching football from “behind the goals” as opposed to on the half way line….

I love F1 but I actually prefer to listen to the audio stream and watch the telemetry on the F1 app in real time. You get a much better sense of what’s going on, how the sector times are shifting, deltas, strategies etc. I usually watch the highlights after.

I probably wouldn’t go to an F1 race now unless I had something special like pit access. That would be amazing.

However if tickets to Le Mans were on the table…..

While its classed as "sports entertainment", an indie wrestling show has a live atmosphere thats unlike anything you can get elsewhere.
