important decisions in life? How do you choose betwen several good options and do you discuss things with other people before making up your mind? (Again, light hearted;-)

Like most things in my life, I listen to what my heart tells me, I listen to gut instinct and if need be I run it pass & discuss it openly with Mrs.

If it fails then I must have let my mind get the better off me

Being a single gal, I have nobody to consult really. I rarely make snap decisions about the important stuff, I weigh it all up and then decide

But once my mind has been made up and a final decision reached, there is very little could sway me..

I believe the decisions I make are right at the time....

I agree with you - sometimes I am really sure of something and then when I discuss it with another person I get second thoughts which is probably a good thing.

Depends !

Some I make snap decisions on cos they just feel right

Others I just um and ah for a bit and then make a decision one way or the other

Others I consider deeply and do all my groundwork, so that when I do decide either way, I have a way forward and a contingency

Others, I get pushed on and think 'ah fuck it, what will be will be'

Good point about decisions being right at a particular time! Sometimes circumstances change, don't they and then we look back and think maybe we should have chosen differently but at that time it still was the right thing to do.

I vary a bit in heart/ head proportion depending on the circumstances and some simply require to rule one out completely in favour of the other.

Made me chuckle... I was thinking of the example of getting married many years ago. It was the right decision at the time and although divorced 20 years later, I would not have had my great children.. so even with hindsight it was the right decision if that makes sense.

Made me chuckle... I was thinking of the example of getting married many years ago. It was the right decision at the time and although divorced 20 years later, I would not have had my great children.. so even with hindsight it was the right decision if that makes sense.

But I wouldn't be where I am and who I am if I hadn't made each and every one...

That is how I think of my decisions that turned out to be the wrong ones on reflection. Life is not a straight road ... and that is reflected in our decisions.

Quite often when faced with big decisions in life the temptation of self-interest understandably guides the mind…

I’d like to think I’ve passed the time in my life where thats an legitimate influence, and now I just try and do the right things for the right reasons…

Good point (How do you always do that!!??)

Joke aside - I think there is an element of self interest even in altruistic actions (the reward of the feel good factor for example) and there is nothing wrong with that - it is part of our hierarchy of needs.

I have found that as I get older I get more of that pleasure from doing the right things and for the right reasons, too.

Depends what the decision is I have to make and whether it would make an impact on someone else.

I feel though even minor decisions, like what shall we have for dinner tonight, it is nice to include others...it gives them a choice and an equality, rather than feeling they only get what they are given!

Major decisions in my life, I hold my own counsel, as other people may have something worth inputting but at the end of the day it is your life, you yourself can only work out what is the best thing to do.

The last time I ignored my instinct was many years ago and almost ended in tragedy so instinct is incredibly important in both my work and family life.

The 'something is not quite right' feeling is usually absolutely correct, especially when it comes to the children and grandchildren.

Once I've made a decision, I tell my grown children and we usually have a good discussion that gives me different points of view or adds something for us all to think about.

For example, I'm coming off the housing market and renting. I doubt I will ever want a mortgage again and my son was horrified. My initial decision was a knee-jerk reaction to something but after our talk together, it's a more sensible decision than I had previously thought and we are all happy.

Normally would talk it through with mrs, parents and good friends then way up what everyone's has said then make a decision. I find it hard to make big decisions with out a helping hand, plus I can blame someone else if it goes wrong
