So I seem to have picked up a new cat who won't stay out the house, or garden and my cats won't go out now...they weren't bothered when it was in the house yesterday or this morning but refuse to go outside with it!

My dog scared the "stray" off yesterday but he or she is insistent it is living here now and been hanging about for the past 3 hours.

It is a black cat, does this mean I am going to be lucky?

And how can I get it to go?

"Water spray?"

Not sure, as the dog chasing after it yesterday has not deterred the bugger!

Paint a white strip on it's back and it will believe it is a skunk and leave for North America.

Actually, its not harsh at all compared to

a) Having another animal chase after it which may catch it and injure it

b) Using sonic repellents which will also affect dogs

c) Using scented deterrents such as pepper or specific deterrents - because OP has a dog who will also be affected.

I'm not talking about using a pressure washer - more a spray bottle filled with water as a deterrent.

I had a similar problem quite a few years ago, I cleaned out a fairy liquid bottle and filled it with clean water then used that to squirt at the cat.

It worked for a while then I found out the cats owner had died so I stoppd the spraying and started feeding! Had him for about 12 years

Julie if you do find the solution I would be eternally grateful as well because next door's cat (2 of the buggers) continually come into our house and eat our cats food ........... via an electronic cat flap that is supposed to work on their chips ....... cept the buggers next door can activate it somehow ........

Can you not send the dog out with your cats as their bodyguard?

London

We had 4 rescue cats and then a mangy matted lice ridden tabby Tom cat from down the road fell in love with one of them she, even though she had been spayed, teased him when he jumped on her she bit him....... But regardless he waited in all weathers.....14 years later that same wonderful fine coated loving and loyal tabby Tom that we took in died last Sunday, he was by far the best natured of our cats and outlived all except one!!!

no matter

Pop it in a cat carrier and go to nearest vet clinic . Have the. Cat scanned for a microchip. If it has one the owner can be contacted. If not call the cat protection league and ask them to collect the cat.
