Spyholes and safety

Do you have a spyhole?

Do you think about opening your front door in a safe way if you don't?

Do you think about your safety at home, do you think or have things in arms reach just in case?

Or do you not think about it at all?

(Context for asking is: I have a condition. I only speak through the door. A person knocked yesterday. They said they were from my housing association. I looked through the spyhole but they kept their back to me. I asked for ID. They ignored and said they had to inspect my sensors. I told them I don't open the door, but that it was already done. They demanded I open. I told them my condition and that I don't open the door. They banged their fist on the door and then left. )

Sounds like you need a door cam.

Would have been useful to have the guy on camera if he’s behaving like that - seems suspicious to me.

I have a ring doorbell. So notifications come up on my phone and I check the camera before answering the door if I'm not expecting anyone.

Can also talk to them through the doorbell to find out who they are and what they want.

Can you call the housing association and ask if they've sent anyone round. But like previous poster said, get yourself a doorcam

We don't have a spycam, but the safety chain is always on.

We live in an inner city area,so don't open the door unless we're 100% sure of who it is.

Sad world isn't it?

😮‍💨

I'm sorted as my phone camera can see through the spyhole. I did phone HA and it wasn't them.

But do you think about the 'what if's' whilst at home?

Unless im expecting someone or a parcel, I never answer the door and ring doorbells are the safest way to see who's there.

That was definitely a shitbag up to no good

I probably don’t take it seriously enough but being a male confident enough that I can deal with most situations it’s probably different, just the other day I accidentally left my keys in the outside of the door all night and before fitting a thumb turn lock would often go to bed with the door unlocked as couldn’t be bothered to search for keys to lock it. I justified it as having a fog he would let me know if anyone came in

"This is why everyone should have a guard goose "

I had guard geese, they decided they didn’t like humans…… which was great, until the day I realised I was included in that hatred

Sorry to hear about your experience OP, hope you manage to put it behind you x

Sounds dodgy to me pal.

I would do as advised and get a door cam and don’t be shy about calling the police either.

You did the right thing in not opening the door, to be honest when he banged on the door just call the police..

Might not get a response there and then but any bloke who's doing that is a wrong un ..

I agree, contact the police as I'm sure you won't be the only person he's done this to, and he needs to be stopped before he does serious harm to someone.

I do think about opening the door in a safe way. If I'm at home alone I just wouldn't answer unless I knew who it was. When Mr N is home I feel safer because I know he can handle trouble. We keep things to hand 'in case' too.

We do have security in place too.

I don't have a spy hole and I need to replace my doorbell camera.

I don't have many people knock on my door, and I'm in a quiet area. As a result, I open with caution, in a position ready to slam the door shut if necessary.

Sorry you experienced that, OP, and I agree, they were not who they said they were. HA staff would normally pre-book a visit and be happy to show ID. Like others have said, I'd report to the police. It's likely they tried a few doors, who know what their aim.

Report it to the Police OP, sounds very sinister to me. Neighbours could have cam footage.
