Hi gang,

I know this is fab but I like the different opinions. Plus I can’t put this on my socials.

I’m cat-sitting for my mum’s friend this week, and when I got here, I noticed a few places could use some cleaning. I’m wondering about doing a bit of a deeper clean, but I’m not sure if that would come off as rude. I definitely plan to tidy up after myself, but I just want to be helpful without overstepping. The last thing I would want to do is make anyone feel any type of shame.

I appreciate we all have our own standards when it comes to these things, and this is not extremely unclean home at all. There’s just bits here and there that I can see.

What do you think?

I'd leave it as is unless you're really uncomfortable with the current state. They might think it's intrusive and what else you'd changed.

It would be a very nice gesture to give the place a bit of a spruce up, but just don't mention it x

If asked just say you were tidying up after yourself and got carried away.

Personally, I wouldn't do anything other than clean up after myself. As you said, it's not extremely unclean and if it's just bits of clutter, I'd just leave it as is even if it would annoy me. You don't want that phone call later on asking where X is and why it isn't where they left it 😅

Hi Jamie,

I think that while your gesture is well intended, I'd be inclined to leave things as they are.

I think the natural response will be interpreted as 'so you think I'm untidy'; of course this is not always the case.

If it was family member there would be a greater chance of it being accepted as you intend it. 😊

Definitely don’t deep clean. Tidying up after yourself yes but I personally wouldn’t go further than that. You run the risk of them seeing you as either judgemental or disgusted by the way they live which wouldn’t be your intention.

I'd really appreciate it but I would just say I cleaned up after myself and not mention you've done it.

Just to be clear, it’s not so much tidying away her things. I would hate not knowing where all my stuff is. More like cleaning her fridge and oven etc.

Personally without understanding the actual person circumstances, if I knew that they struggled at times or could see it in a way with my own eyes and it's out of the ordinary. Then I'd do it as a friendly gesture

I'd still be inclined to leave everything as is.

For them it could be exactly how they want it, one person's chaos is an other person's organised.

I think it depends how close you are. If you are very familiar and you think they would appreciate it I'd say go for it. But I think you're always running the risk of them getting very offended that you've messed with their stuff or think they're dirty or are being interfering etc.

It really depends on the person and your relationship.

This is what I'd do. I'd maybe say I'd finished my book and couldn't find anything to watch on TV and had some energy to burn, and then got carried away tidying up after myself.

I usually pay for a deep clean when I am on holiday,as long as this isn't the case ,I can't imagine why they wouldn't be thrilled.

I would check about the oven though as lots have yearly cleans from the manufacturer.

I have a gorgeous cat ,Xena if you evet fancy coming to cat sit .

Have you spoke to your Mum to see what she thinks? She may be able to offer insight

I personally wouldn't. I do clean both my son's places if I am house sitting because they know what I'm like and I feel comfortable to do it...

Obviously I can only speak from my perspective. I don't know either of you.

If a friend agreed to cat sit for me and they cleaned my oven and fridge i'd be FUCKING LIVID.

You can cat sit for me any time, I’ll go off camping for a few days and I can borrow a cat, and get some cleaning materials in for you.

Thank you for all your replies! It’s good to see different views on it. I’m leaning more towards leave it. I think I would be a little embarrassed if someone felt the need to clean my home. Unless it was my mum. I used to love it when she came to stay and super deep cleaned 😍

Thank you for the invitations to cat sit. Please do not steal any cats to entice me round to clean!

I often clean my dad's fridge and loo but he's 98, partially sighted and my dad. I wouldn't know where to start with his oven, I suspect it's beyond redemption. God knows what his cleaner does.

I was thinking this too!!

I'm well aware I don't do anywhere near enough cleaning. The oven, which I very rarely use, is crying for a clean!

But I can see how.some people may not like it and the connotations...

Definitely, don't do it. I learned first hand how bad that can go...🙈

I used a mates flat once while I was working away West, turns out at the same time he was working away further west so I had the place to myself. Much like your situation the gaff definately would have benefited from a clean, so over the two weeks I was there, I did the place top to bottom - like a shiny new penny it was...

He came home the weekend before I left and as much as he was grateful I'd cleaned, he was DEVASTATED I'd spent 20 minutes scrubbing a dirty old mug that had stains a millimeter thick; turns out he'd learned from a travel show in India that Tea tasters never clean their tea-cups as it improves the flavour of the tea, so he'd been cultivating his own tea tasting mug for over a year!!!! 😖

Doesn't matter cant block distances

Sorry disagree with most..if you're cleaning with products you've purchased then nothing wrong with that but I'd not relocate any items and id mention it..

Hi I appreciate you allowing me to stay in your home cat sitting I've cleaned up after myself and your hones beautiful. Leave flowers drink etc. A card with another cat sitting day out and possibly just a card saying if you know any other friends who'd like a deep cleaning cat sitter please recommend me.

They'll either notice and appreciate the deep cleaning or not. I again wouldn't relocate any personal items far from a designated spot or rummage through drawers, closed bedroom doors, etc.

I’m not looking to make this a regular thing. She couldn’t get the fleabag into a cattery. I wouldn’t want recommendations

If you’re staying there and think it needs cleaned while you do then go for it. Why would anyone be annoyed if someone who was staying over at their house helping them out by cat sitting then cleaned too??

You can always just say you made a mess and that’s why it’s been cleaned up??
