Are you like me and like to say hi to people when being out and about? Or do you try to avoid saying anything to them when you pass them and look away or down at your mobile?

How do you greet them? I dont always do it, but most of the time I do. I say hi and good morning with a nice smile and a little wave to them, sometimes if it leads to small talk and if they have a dog I always like to ask what the name of the dog is.

Did you also know that saying hi is important, it is a simple act that can significantly improve social connections and boost mood and create a sense of community, not just that but it also is a way to acknowledge someones presence which is important too

Around here, people only say "hi" to strangers if out for a walk, preferably in the countryside. If you're out shopping, or popping to the hairdressers, the rule is no eye contact and complete silence as you pass each other.

Out on the street in general, absolutely not. Big obvious headphones on, huge dark sunglasses. Do not make eye contact, do not engage. I'm walking somewhere, I'm not invested in the world around me at that point, just in getting to my destination. I do not want or need interaction with strangers. And the way I carry myself makes this obvious to anyone with half an ounce of sense or consideration, so those who try to talk at me anyway are absolutely not people I want to deal with.

Somewhere actually a social, a bar or coffee shop or smoking area or something, I will say something if I have something to say, usually a compliment or friendly question about what they're doing or wearing, but I still won't make vapid small talk about nothing if I have nothing to say 💜

At work whilst on site I mostly greet others with a hi, whilst out walking in the parks or countryside we would normally say a good morning or afternoon to fellow walkers. But it's sometimes down to body language.

Personally I don't feel the need to greet people I don't know. Also people can get offended by this is others don't reflect themselves back to them. Not everyone wants to talk and not everyone can talk so trying to force an interaction with anyone is a little selfish especially when they will be deemed rude if they don't respond appropriately.

If people make eye contact then I will always give a nod, say hello etc. I don’t instigate it though if they don’t. They could have their minds elsewhere.

But never in London or in a big city you’d never get anything done. You just spend all day saying hello to people.

I wouldn't say odd. Sometimes just focused on something or simply keen to get to where they're going. If I'm heading somewhere specific when out, especially if there's time pressures or I'm on my way to meet someone, then other people are the last thing on my mind. If I'm just having an afternoon amble around the shops killing time it's different.

But dogs......

Put a dog in front of me and I can end up chatting for ever. Probably 50/50 to the dog and owner. I'm currently dogless for the first time in about 20 years and whilst I love the freedom it gives me I miss the random social interactions that happen between dog parents.

I usually say hi or hello or morning. This, one may add, tends to be relative to geographic location. More relaxed, sedate locations tend to result in a higher frequency of greetings...

If I'm out in the mountains I'll say hello to everyone I meet and many are happy to do stop for a chat.

On the street I don't say hi to everyone but only to those I make eye contact with. Most will respond but some don't.

I am definately chatting to all the old dears at the bus stop. Often smile and say hi to people passing. I ask people how they are in the local shops. I also compliment people on what they wear or a new haircut. If on holiday, definately say hello to locals if I catch their eye ( hola and all that😀). The lady on tbe phone this morning that was sorting out a mistake on a bill I had was particularly chatty. Her mum is having a hip operation next week btw. I know most people these days walk about as if they want to thumb you but hey ho.

I think this goes generally into the north and south discussion, as a southerner i tend not to say hi to people unless they have said hi, smiled first. But when I go north, people seem alot nicer and say morning alot more than us

Was brought up when everyone exchanged pleasantries on passing by, it's my attempt at clawing back a small sense of community like there used to be.

Think it's important especially for the old timers that might not otherwise speak to anyone that day apart from the cashier in Tesco/Asda.

I say hi to randomers where I live, or when I'm out for a walk in the countryside and may stop for a quick chat if something of note has happened or is happening . I don't tend to greet people in the bigger towns/cities, as it there are so many people there to say it to, it would feel weird. I may strike up a conversation though.

Where I live, what's the worst that can happen? They say hi back or have a brief chat? To me that is not so terrible. Plus that 'hi' or natter may make someone feel a little better, feel acknowledged and it's not cost me anything mentally or physically. It's just a 'hi'.
