Anyone ever had one as a pet?? My lad loves animals and I'm not allowed furries in the flat, but reps etc are allowed. So was thinking of saving up and getting him a tortoise for Xmas. I know you can keep them indoors with UV. Xx

In Your Bush

They are probably the most boring animal that Noah ever carried onto the Arc

Awwww they're cute! And fairly low maintenance. And they don't eat your furniture. Or fingers. X

If reps are allowed I'd go for the club 18-30 type, rather than a photocopier paper sales rep!

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

Friends had a rather troublesome one that would nip and hump every cushion or foot it found.

If you get it for Christmas it will be asleep, which may not be the best way to get your son interested in looking after his pet.

Seriously expensive to buy a big one these days.....

I think I'm right is saying many pet shops only sell British bred ones now……

The ones I looked at were about 100 quid each and no bigger than an half a tennis ball…

Putting the 'cum' in Eboracum

If you get one, try to use a proper breeder as the ones sold at pet shops tend to be illegally imported.

Is he expecting them to run away a lot?

If you are happy with him then go for it. I think tortoises are great but I'd soon lose one in my garden!

Yeah that's how we ended up with ours and i never feed him my son does and the crickets are kept out of sight lol...wax worms i don't mind giving him and he seems to like them more as the lazy sod doesn't have to work to catch them.

Be verrrry careful about what tortoise you might buy - some species just aren't suited to a terrarium life .....

I've got a Turkish SpurThighed ... She's about 40 and a couple of kilos in weight !

Buyes from a reputable dealer ....

And have a look at the Tortoise Trust website fit the best advice
