According to New Scientist magazine, 1 in 4 people obey rules even when there is no gain or punishment.

In your regular life, or your non regular life, how do you feel about rules? And do you break them, observe them, or set them?

I don't mind rules if there's a purpose or a proper reason for the rule. It's when there's no reason for the rule I flout said rule and become rebellious

I think it’s worth considering the social reason for rules. Where they’re about control, I’m more likely to resist and break them. Where they’re about safety I’m likely to follow them.

So if it’s a rule that you can’t challenge something compared to not being allowed to go somewhere

I dont really get what the study means, to be honest. Pretty much everything comes with rules or social acceptability or social norms. There is a right and a wrong way of doing most things, and choosing the wrong one 'Judt because' is a bit of a bug bearer of mine, within society.

I am with Kohlberg on this - compliance with rules for the sake of it, is the lowest stage of moral development.

It's also logically unsound as it is an appeal to authority.

Rules should be assessed against an individuals beliefs, values and the situational context.
