Fear of dentist

Today I surpassed myself.

Had an 8.30 appointment with hygienist - just a scrape and polish, routine. Sat I the chair and burst into tears. Absolutely hysterical! Tears rolling down face and sobbing.

Didn't get it finished, I had to call time on it, just could not get myself together. Has ruined my whole day...

Anybody any thoughts why some of us are so terrified of the dentist?

Anybody any suggestions to get over it? am seriously considering docs for pills to take day of next appointment...

My dentist prescribes Valium for those with this fear. Maybe just set up a meeting with your dentist and talk through your fears.

The hygienist recommended gong to the docs....I felt awful for her..she was lovely and I was just a mess...

I am usually so sensible, logical and can talk myself into or out of anything..This is just so irrational..

Have you always been like this or is it something that has just come on. Ive no fear but was really worried about root canal treatment, ive got my last appointment on thursday and ive been fine.

Is it the sensations, the noise, the smell? Maybe if you could work out in your head what the fear is you would be able to address it

Most dentists will accommodate anyone with a phobia....

Talk to your dentist...

There's nothing rational about phobias. My colleague has a dentist phobia and had hypnotherapy to sort it. She still doesn't like them though.

I have been like this for years....Never this bad though...It is the whole experience, but I think going and worrying that I might need treatment. You name it, I have had it, crowns, root canals, fillings, the lot...I am so bad they had to be an extraction under sedation as by body fights the local anaesthetic and it doesn't have any effect. 10 injections to get a filling and I still felt everything...

I don't really class this as a phobia because I do go...I don't avoid it because I know rationally I am better to go and keep on top of things rather than get toothache...

But my reaction is certainly extreme...

I know for myself (Chris) my fear of the dentist is totally out of control I sweat in the waiting room shake last time I passed out while I was waiting, I force myself to go but bugger its a terror for me, mine stems back to when I was about 4 when for some unknown reason our family dentist decided I needed a tooth out well the anisthetic was to try and distract me with a teddy bear needless to say I screamed for about a week after that lol

I can totally relate! My fear came when I was a kid and the dentist, in his wonderful chair-side manner, sprayed my bare arm with the freezing spray without telling me and I shot out the chair like lightning! He was only trying to help but he could've told me first.

I recently had to have two teeth out (due to not going for ages because of my fear) and I was bricking it before the first one! I have to say though, I was rather embarrassed as it was over in three minutes, I didn't feel a thing (apart from a little prick but thats nothing new!) and that was it.

I can totally sympathise with everyone else though, you seem to have it much worse than me and yet you still went, I didn't!

when i was in my twenties i had a panic attack at the dentist.

i find i am more relaxed with a woman usualy.

if they know you are nervous it can help. when i have to have a tooth out or something i ask them to talk to me as it relaxes me, and i never look at the instruments or needle, i close my eyes. try and concentrate on something else, like a picture on the wall, anything at all except having your teeth done.

Nobody is more scared of the dentist than me !!! and thats not bragging ......... but gradually over the years I have gone from having to have intravenous, to gas n air for just routine treatment to now being able to sit in the chair and have work done .......... if u can have a relationship whereby u trust your dentist and know they will stop wot they are doing if u raise your hand and give u chance to adjust your breathing and calm down then u will get there ......... talk to your dentist and explain your fears and ask them to book a little longer for your appointment so that they can do the work and u know u can freak if you need to - hope this helps - try the deep breathing technique too xx

I was terrified of dentists after having a bad dentist as a kid-but after starting going again when the kids were born and having a dentist that I explained my fears to, I can honestly say talk to your dentist or find one who understands your fear. It's more common than you think.

near the sounds of the wimborne quarter jack!

Well thankfully I`m not as bad as some of you! My Mum gave me an electric toothbrush and I had it on my teeth for about 1/2 second before it got thrown across the bathroom! Couldn`t stand the vibrations on my teeth! So drills give me the creeps and even polish/descale doesn`t go down too well either. Had a really bad experience with one dentist who extracted one tooth that had the root fused to the one next to it. The bastid should have stopped and sent me to hospital to have it removed under a general anasthetic but he carried on until it was out - bit by bit! Then he sent me home with a mouth full of blood and and cotton wool instead of plugging the hole! Gawd knows how I managed to drive that far without swallowing!

Now this might sound weird but i actually enjoy going to the dentist the way i look at it is that its kind of like a mot but for my oral health.

If i get checked regularly then any potential problems can be dealt with rather than waiting till it becomes a major problem.

My hygienist is very cute and i love it when shes says move up the chair a little so your heads i my lap, gets me going everytime

.

Up until the other month I had been to the dentist about 6 times in 37 years.

Unfortunately circumstances meant I had no option but to go. Luckily I found a dentist,(an NHS one at that),who fitted me in the next day. She then came and sat in my car outside the surgery and talked to me.

My fear isn't completely cured, but I do feel more comfortable going
