I heard the arguments last week and listened to the This Morning discussion today. I'm still not sure. I have a little problem with the age of consent and the age of majority being different.

Where do you think the age of consent should be?

i agree with philips point it will only mean that 'dirty old men' will be able to prey on vulnerable children easier.

I do not think that the age should be changed..

People are not physically or mentally developing faster. It is just children are allowed to act and dress older.

I think it is another case of this country not wanting to prosecute people. It is like drugs, it is to difficult to deal with so we will just change the law to fit.

Keep it at 16 as far as im concerned some 16 year olds still look and act very much like children...I know some look older and are more mature but its few and far between.

I was in no way ready for sex at 14 and don't think its a good age to be made the age of consent i have not been watching the debate but was having a conversation with my son about it yesterday and as a teen he also agreed it should be 16.

I was willing to be sexually active earlier than 16. The law, and other factors, kept me virginal until I was 17. I don't think I felt any more mature at 17 than I did at 15 though.

This is to prevent older people manipulating younger people into sex e.g. 35 with a 16...

but if say two 14 year olds were experimenting or curios then that's fine. I would say a year either side until 16, then 2 years till 20, then a free for all....

This applies to men and women of any orientation.

I was 17 and there is no way i was ready before then...My mother terrified me enough not to let a boy touch me mind.

With my lads one is very ready and grown up and i know he is having sex and the other is very much not having sex and i think if his girlfriend ever made the move on him he would wet his pants.

They are still very much the hold hands and a kiss on the cheek gf and bf and i think its good and they should stay that way as long as possible..I just don't want them to grow up

If someone is going to have sex they are whatever the age of consent is. Teenagers all develop at different rates so I don't believe one age suits all. However as we do have an age of consent it may as well stay how it is. But if two fourteen year olds where found to be in a sexual relationship together I doubt either would be prosecuted

My daughter is sixteen in three weeks.

I know she has an interest in boys but she has never had a boyfriend. She's very mature for her age in most things but I don't think she's mature enough for sex or a relationship.

Compare this to my friends eighteen year old daughter who has recently admitted to having a sexual relationship for a couple of years.

I think the age of consent is about right. Children grow up at different rates but by sixteen they should have an all round knowledge of sex and what it entails.

Well that is not going to be very good on this site.. there are plenty of examples of 20 year olds getting together with 50+ year olds.

I 100% agree !! The law is already there, and we should enforce it more, not just make exceptions! There are no grey areas, to me it is black and white, it is 0 and 1 !

In normal circumstances 16 seems a fair age to expect young people to take legal responsibility for their personal behaviour….!.

But I still think 18 seems the right age to give young people the option in having a say over the rights of others...!.

So my vote is “No Change”

Remember that as it stands, any 16 year old is fair game for any person... pretty vulnerable are those who get jobs and pressure is put on them...

And i'm pretty sure we all have a story or two about older people manipulating younger people into providing the older person with sexual services...

of similar age prevents predatory sex...

But as always, 'you' can think what you like.

This is my suggestion to prevent older people manipulating younger people for their own needs...

The age of consent to any form of sexual activity is 16 for both men and women.

The Sexual Offences Act 2003 introduced a new series of laws to protect children under 16 from sexual abuse. However, the law is not intended to prosecute mutually agreed teenage sexual activity between two young people of a similar age, unless it involves abuse or exploitation.

Specific laws protect children under 13, who cannot legally give their consent to any form of sexual activity. There is a maximum sentence of life imprisonment for rape, assault by penetration, and causing or inciting a child to engage in sexual activity. It is, though that charge can only be levied against the boy. I would think though, that without other circumstances and evidence then that charge wouldn't occur between two consenting children.

On the wider debate, I think leave it as it is and where there is a "grey" area, for example a 16 year old with a 15 year old then the law if it became involved would most likely turn a blind eye, assuming it had all been with consent.

wow !! I have just been reading some of the act, and I have to say to me after a quick browse to it very worrying! It seems to give lots of exceptions. I though the age of consent was 16, but this act almost makes out it 13? OMG !!

To be honest, with the fact that society and the law seem to turn a blind eye to sex under 16 to such a large extent, I'd be all in favour of raising the age of consent to 18 in line with the age of majority.

The law have just seems to complex and open to too abuse. I mean we are all quite intelligent people in here and we do not seem to understand the law. So how is an under 18 year old meant to understand it ?

I think it will make no difference whatsoever if you raised it to 18 other than making those aged 16/17 less likely to seek out sexual health services ,contraception etc for fear of comeback....therefore increasing teen pregnancies and stis. I would say keep it as it is as people will continue to have sex when they want and not when the law dictates they can.

I remember a thread asking people when they lost their virginity and certain people couldn't answer because probably because of their age at the time. It's not the age but our attitude that needs to change when it comes to sex and young people. More communication instead of education directed at young people, especially at home.

If people are going to have sex then they will the age thing never stopped people when i was at school and no doubt it still happens because they know they will just get a slap on the wrist if they are caught.
