Please recomend me a good iron

My iron has died and need a new one

apparantly we have hard water here and i keep knackering my irons

I want a good one that i can use tap water with

Any suggestions?

yes they are I was lucky enough to get mine as a product tester. Usually I just get yogurt or toothpaste

Check out eBay. I got one on there a lot cheaper than the high street.

Personally though we,d recommend going on whick dot co dot uk. Join for a trial period. It's £1 for the month then cancel. You'll get an excellent review list for three bands. Economy, mid to higher and you should get the best iron for the price range you can afford x

I'll make this simple. I have used one iron in several areas around the UK, in both hard and soft water areas.

That Iron was from Tesco, it wasn't an expensive one, and 4 years later, is still going strong.

Lidl had some Tefal Steam Generator ones in a while back and I do remember they were quite reasonably priced.

I also have a cheap iron from Tesco, which is doing well after 5 years.

I bought a steam generator one from Aldi 4 years ago, cost be 39.99.

Its still going strong - and I iron just about everything!!

People are often confused over which type of water to use in a steam iron and we are always being asked questions like "Can I use tap water in my iron?" and "What type of water is suitable for steam irons?". So here is our ultimate guide that will hopefully banish any doubts you might have about the correct water to use.

Tap Water

All modern steam irons and steam generators can use tap water. In the UK, tap water can vary in its 'hardness' as this map shows. Darker areas have harder water.

Hard Water

Hard water contains higher concentrations of minerals such as calcium which causes limescale build up in steam irons reducing their efficiency over time. About 60% of the UK is classed as having hard water. If you live in such an area then the general advice is to simply use the tap water normally and remember to follow the calc-clean procedures.

Distilled Water (Pure Water, De-Ionised Water)

You might think that distilled water would be best for use in a steam iron as all of the impurities and minerals have been removed. However, most steam iron manufacturers now recommend not using 100% distilled water as it can cause the iron to spit and leak.

Calc-Clean

Most steam irons these days will have a calc-clean function which requires you rinse out the boiler to flush these deposits away. Some cheaper models will use special cartridges which need to be replaced at regular intervals. Whatever method your iron uses, it is advisable to follow the cleaning procedure at the recommended intervals or whenever the "calc clean" light comes on.

Home Water Softeners

If you have a water softener in your house then you should not use this water alone - although limescale is reduced, other materials are added which could eventually clog your iron and cause spitting and brown stains. You should use a mix as detailed above, or use the water from a drinking water tap (often installed as part of a full water filter system).

Bottled and other Water

The mineral content can build up over time and reduce the efficiency of your iron. You should also not use vinegar, perfumed water or any other water containing additives or chemicals as they can cause damage resulting in clogged steam nozzles, brown water spits and reduced performance.

Best Steam Irons for Hard Water

The best irons and steam generator irons for hard water areas are those which have a full anti-calc or calc-clean system. This often involves a permanent cartridge system which keeps the calcium deposits in the water tank - you just need to rinse it out periodically.

For the ultimate anti-calc system, check out Tefal steam generator irons. Their system automatically collects all the limescale deposits in a solid block which you can easily remove - no rinsing out required!

OK, now with all this advice available for me personally and I live in a very hard water region it comes down to the weight and steam capability...

I don't use water as I prefer to use bottled products.

I've considered getting the more industrial type as it seems you have to be paying out an average of around £40 and upwards, of course deals are available..

and I don't give a stuff about the colour lol

think I've tried most of the so called leading brands and have my own favorites

We live in a hard water area and i generally find that Tefal dont last that long.

I prefer Bosch steam irons and they do last a lot longer than most.
