It’s 100% internal confidence.

Some days you walk around with your head high , smiling , making eye contact , interacting with people even getting hit on even in every day situations.. Other days you wander around in grey joggers looking at the floor.

I think being empathetic means I’m happy enough to not worry too much about it. A simple compliment is always nice, in work, life and I suppose on here.

Conversely I prefer to notice, enjoy engaging, maybe I’m happy enough to watch others to be seen. Staying in the shadows is no bad thing publicly, self reward for being independent and strong in my core values though is important.

I like it when people appreciate my layers. I get seen often for how much I love books or my dog or the struggle of being a parent, or being a single woman. It's rarer that people understand me being a mixed race woman. Or demisexual and bisexual. The intersection of my identities. Or a bunch of other things and that can be lonely.

By preople important to me? Been seen a lot - since my accident, I get lots of messages from my people, updates, it was my birthday last week, so I was seen a lot. Centre of attention and all that.

As a white man in my 40's this isn't something I have to contend with very often so I don't really think about it too much and that is part of my privilege.

I think there’s an element of performance in all of life though anyway. And so there’s an element of costume and mask in everyone. Obviously different to masking as a ND person but I think being seen extends beyond that. Desire to be seen I think comes from a range of things, not just ND but also MH and other factors in our experience

Goffman’s presentation of self is a good look at this.
