Dark patterns

This topic is admittedly a bit conspiratorial - and it's probably just confirmation bias, but please indulge my tin foil hattery.

First, a definition. Dark patterns are tricks used in websites and apps that make you do things that you didn't mean to, like buying or signing up for something.

Like most other social media websites, I think fab has dark patterns too. Here are a couple I've noticed, mostly related to local updates:

1. The algorithm deliberately shows you profiles that have an age range minimum *just* above your age - I'm talking a difference of a year most of the time. I've noticed this on the forums too, but that's clear delusion on my part.

2. I think it's a considered design decision to show Dublin profiles to London location folks. It's not just that, the profiles that are shown, the hotness/km^2 in Dublin seems unmatched!

Do you agree with my observations? Are there any other dark patterns you've noticed - on this site or elsewhere?

Grass is sometimes greener OP but have to say, no one in Manchester ever seems to look. As far as tinterweb.. nudges, verbal and behavioural queues (eg Blair type hand actions) are pretty historic way of getting people to do or act in a way they wouldn't ordinarily without them knowing.

There's a fine line between theorycrafting and jumping at shadows.

The only dark patterns I've noticed in Dublin is the Guinness.

Some people just cannot accept the responsibility of being free.

It is a big responsibility, if you are lazy & do nothing with it, you feel a failure so better to believe you aren’t really free.

I think that's a bit harsh.. I don't even know if I've answered the question but everyone has been influenced by something at some point.. who knows if fab is social engineering

I agree with the first part. The second part, doing nothing - I don't consider that necessarily to be a failure. Action-orientated constructs can be a way to escape nothingness, a form of bad faith as Sartre put it and therefore arguably a failure in a different way. One were our actions are not self-actualising, and therefore unfulfilling even if they are successful.

Kinda, only here, I think it's more 'making' you spend more time on the site. The things you have to pay for on here like HD pics and videos, etc. don't seem particularly scummy.

What are the benefits to the owners of people spending more time here?

Trivially, people spending more time means they're more likely to spend more money - for any of the features that need silver/gold. Also, there is financial value in people who don't even spend money - no one would want to use a platform which doesn't have other users, there's a reason fab shows number of online people during login.

There’s some dark patterns around my eyes today…

Blame the Havana clubs and a terrific live band last night that played well into the wee hours.

It's good that you admit you could be being a little conspiratorial and that your personal biases could be at play because there are very hefty penalties for companies deliberately deploying 'dark patterns' and other manipulative features......

Probably best not to chop your own nose off eh ?

Do you believe it's accurate? Surely, they'd report a number that would be best for them?

They could even have system glitches, that targeted some users, giving more detail, breaking the numbers down by gender/region

It’s not harsh it’s true.

There’s a certain type of bias you’re describing here I forget which one it is. It’s been awhile since I did the training but rather than following evidence of something existing you choose to imagine that something ‘may’ exist that fits with your existing view.

The flaw here is that in science this is called an hypothesis and it is based on previous work of others - you don’t just make it up because it’s theoretically possible - and then you go ahead and test the hypothesis objectively to determine whether it’s true or not.

That’s how science works, and that’s how we’ve advanced as a species.

What you’re doing is saying we are capable of being influenced therefore FAB may be one big social engineering experience, I think what you’re really saying is I can’t get what I want on this site so let’s imagine a scenario where I am not free/in control and it’s somebody else’s fault

One can't know what to trust anymore . They'll plant some seemingly trustworthy sites amongst the rest, so that we retain some trusting gullibility. There only needs to be 1 provably honest website, so that the rest can manipulate and rinse us

It may not be sophisticated, but there clearly is one for the local updates section.

I’ve had some dark pattern thoughts since this thread popped up.

It’s only a theory, could be way off the mark.

What if those threads that pop up every five minutes with the same three posters over and over again are all the same person?

Multiple profiles.

Sane person talking to themselves just to keep the threads going on page 1.

Thought for food.

What if it is just really one person in the clique pretending to be multiple persons?! 😱

"I’m fairly sure this site doesn’t use algorithms "

I feel like there's some confusion about the definition of an algorithm.

"Recent updates by local people who match your account preferences and location data." - this is an algorithm. Is it using AI - probably not, but there are still some rules that go into what "recent" and "local" mean and how preferences and location data are used.
