Do you prefer audiobooks or written books?

Jump to newest

By *hagTonight OP   Man

From the land of haribos.

I like both, but I prefer the written books more, because i like the to hold the book and I want to read it at my own pace and not someone elses like when you listen to the book and I can also imagining it in my head more of what is happening, you can say that I just prefer the freedom of old fashioned reading.

Having said that I also like the audiobooks too because I get enjoyment from the spoken word and how the authour is describing things like the landscape and how the characters in the book sounds like and acts.

It would be intersting to see which one you prefer or are you like me and like both type of formats too?

I think the skills of the narrator are crucial in providing a good experience with audio books, as you say, a poor narrator can just make you completely loose interest.

I am a poor reader and find audio books a great way to access literature that would I otherwise would not tackle.

Audio books are great for me as I do a lot of walking ...also if I go into the office I have a 1.5 hour commute each way, so that's a great opportunity.

I was an avid reader when younger, but holding the book for long periods gives me cramp in my hand - it was perhaps the precursor to arthritis on reflection

Love books.

Not sure what it is about a physical book but I don’t get the joy from audiobooks in the way that I do with an actual book.

Maybe because you dedicate time completely to a physical book whereas you are usually doing other things when listening to an audiobook.

Interesting question.

Reading

I'm not currently doing much reading but I love all formats of books. Audiobooks are so good for when I'm driving or on my dog walks, for listening to when I'm working. Ebooks are convenient when I'm on the go and don't want to lug around something heavy. And I love the feel of a book in my hands, seeing how many pages until the next chapter or whatever.

As I read this post I'm listening to the hunger games, I've read them in the past but found listening to them now I imagine the actors who played them.

I find audio books are only good depending on the narrator, I've listened to great ones and terrible ones.

I absolutely love both, if I’m reading something that’s really quite intimate or technical then it has to be in a written format

I love an audiobook in a car. It’s just wonderful to listen to and especially when there’s a good narrator.

When the kids were small, we listen to Harry Potter and Artemis fowl on an audiobook, we would often pull over and wait for the chapter to end before we got out the car because we were all so glued to the story - which was great fun and a lovely thing to have shared

I love holding and reading books.

I bought Bob Mortimer’s autobiography for C’s birthday and we are reading a chapter each aloud each evening to each other.

Even though it’s being read to me, I can still imagine Bob’s saying it.

I suspect an autobiography would be good if read by the person but audiobooks read by someone else don’t work for me - their voice would either grate on me or if it’s someone famous I’d just be remembering a film or TV show they were in.

I do enjoy a good audio book while driving (or 'vintage' radio comedy such as "Just A Minute" or "I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue. A good bit of classic comedy can be the ideal accompaniment, something to keep you lightly engaged but not deep enough to distract you from the road).

I don't do novels. I really didn't enjoy English Literature at school ('Lord Of The Flies' & 'Pygmalion', I have never read bigger pieces of shit in my life, particularly L.o.t.F), so my physical reading these tends to be restricted to factual historical books, and political/ football autobiographies. Haven't picked up a piece of fiction in forty years, just can't do 'em.

I’ve always enjoyed reading books, got a few hundred that I’ve collected.

When the kindle first came out, I said that I’d never buy one as it’s not a book……….

I now own a kindle fire (I can watch films on it too 😂) with probably 3000 odd books in the library.

I never got the audio book thing if you were able to read a book (not blind, partially sighted etc) then I discovered that audiobooks are brilliant to while away the commute and long drives…….yes you’ve guessed it I’ve got another 50 odd audiobooks now and I’ve also discovered that Spotify subscriptions allow you to listen to audiobooks too.

In a nutshell shell I’ll take all sorts of books……paper, screen or spoken.

Written. Audio isn't for me for many reasons - I'm quite picky about voices (yay I can say I'm picky ) and the wrong one, the wrong emphasis... I'm not listening. I also find I'm more likely to take information in that's written rather than spoken.

And... I love a tangible book. One I can curl up with, get lost in the pages. My mind wandering in whatever place I'm reading. I've loved literature from a very early age, studied it at postgrad level... audio doesn't compare.

Whilst I have several bookcases with around 500 books - I use an e-reader (Kindle).

I see numbers of comments on the feel and smell of a book, but there are huge drawbacks to them.

They're heavy. I read a couple of novels etc a week. When away, it's more. When away for a time I can take more books on a single device than I ever could read.

They do not remember your place in the read. I never liked turning down corners and if your bookmarks falls out...

You cannot read them in poor lighting - my kindle is back-lit.

You cannot change to font or the size of the font.

I can start to read on my Kindle and, if I get a moment to myself I can continue it on another device.

Even if there is a book in my cupboard I want to read, I will source an electronic copy.

For me, the e-reader wins hands down.
