I'd like to ask for some help please

I have the sky dish on the outside wall.

I have a cable that comes in through the wall which is a thick cable and at the end splits into two. The connectors are a push over the hole and screw it.

That goes into my sky box which is approx 14 years old. It's says sky+HD but I don't have a HD tv.

I don't pay for any sky subscription I just get bbc2,bbc3 bbc4 channel 5, hgtv, itv 2 3 4, film 4, dmax, and some others.

In the changing weather sometimes the signal drops out.

My power was off today for a few hours and now I'm not getting satellite signal.

.......

My question is

How do you watch terrestrial tv?

Any suggestions on whether I should ask someone to look at the dish or should I come out of the dark ages and get myself acquainted with the way of today

Not in your area

Most TVs now have freeview built-in.

I've personally not seen a set top box for over a decade

That means buying a new tv which I can't afford

Turn your sky box off, take your card out, wait 10 mins, turn sky box back on then insert card again

When you have the pennies look into getting IPTV costs about £50 a year and you get every single channel in the world, all movies etc

You can get a freeview box for about 30 quid on Amazon, you get over a hundred channels with it, might be worth a look if the sky dish is always playing up.

What is Freeview exactly? I have a Samsung TV with apps like Netflix Apple TV, BBC Iplayer but I don’t think I can get terrestrial TV at all.

You almost certainly do have the terrestrial channels available, you probably just need to plug in an aerial and select auto tune.

The TVs come with so many bundled apps these days I think people actually forget they also have Freeview

Stopped watching TV more than 20 years ago, as that’s all my Dad did, and I was going the same way - I do watch YouTube, but cannot stand adverts, so I pay for Premium

It depends on what you mean by not having a HDTV... you mean its just an old flatscreen LCD one or you still have the old giant box CRT type?

The old sky boxes usually function in a basic freeview TV setup once your subscription has expired (the new ones they turn it off shortly afterwards remotely)- I'm guessing you have the black one with the silver streak across the front?

Turn it off and on again- if that doesn't work, Press the Services button on your remote and then the 4 & 6 buttons. You'll get the Signal Test Menu. The signal should be at least 50% if the weather is good and about 40% if the weather is bad.

Do you have an aerial cable too? if you have a flat screen, plug it in and do a channel scan (as long as its not the old glass box type TV).

You can get freeview via your satellite dish, but it usually involves changing the LNB on the dish (the sticky out blob) and you need a TV with a satellite port to do it- so aerial is your best bet.

You can pick up replacement Sky boxes on freecycle/trash nothing or cheaply on Facebook marketplace. just look for one with the same model number as yours to be safe (label on the bottom or rear)

Occasionally, you can pick up a half decent TV on freecycle/trash nothing- just takes luck to be on at the right time and go as soon as possible to pick it up- they don't hang round long. I picked up a great little 23" smart tv for my office a coule of years ago on there

It's a flat screen, not sure on LCD, tried sky box again and no signal. Think it's the dish.

I have plugged my tv ariel that comes from the ariel on the roof into the back of tv, and I've got bbc1, 2, itv, channel 4 and film 4. Had to change my whole room around lol just for tv.

I think I might research the connections for a freeview box. The tv only has the one ariel socket. 1 hdmi socket. 1 scart socket.

Thanks for the posts.....I'm still not technologically minded but it has helped
