Absolutely correct, it's Mam. There's just no place for that American nonsense Mom. Like everything else in the last 20 years, our language and culture has been hijacked by the yanks. Don't get me started on people elaborately celebrating halloween - bon fire night was the British thing!!!! And black bloody Friday.........

Transsexual Transylvania

Mom is probably the most common version in English-speaking South Africa. I grew up using that, as did all the kids around me.

When we moved to the UK, after a while we started using Mum, as that what what our daughter naturally used for my wife (like her peers). No need to confuse the issue.

My mom is still Mom though.

Well, as former South African, I still use Mom when talking to family over there. And as a Sad Old Goth, Halloween is a good bit of fun, and we celebrate it very elaborately. ❤🎃❤

Bonfire night and Halloween are 2 completely different events on different dates.

I think locality determines what you call your mother. I'm mam, but I do know plenty of grown ups who will say mammy.

"Mum"

As an interesting digression from a native Welsh speaker: the English ‘Dad’ is actually borrowed from the Welsh ‘Tad’ — so next time you say “Hi Dad”, you’re basically speaking Welsh, whether you like it or not! Meanwhile, the more formal ‘Father’ sticks to its old Germanic roots, (Vater) because even language knows when you’re in trouble…
