"Just a thought but have you seen an optician? They could at least check you eye health and vision as it’s a while before your appointment." Many thanks. I’ll set-up an appointment on Monday morning.

"I've had pain in my eye morn-eve for so many years I can't remember, as above - opticians have said to use non synthetic drops... A hospital visit hasn't ever been mentioned" That’s reassuring. Plus I’ve not been given an emergency appointment.

"Have you tried googling it? Are you rundown at all? It could be pink eye" No, but Wikipedia lists 55 possible causes!

"When I wake up in the morning, I open my eyes, and the light hurts my left eye for a minute or two. Otherwise it’s OK. I have an eye hospital appointment for the 6th June. Meanwhile, can anyone please tell me what may be wrong? " If they thought it was serious you'd be seen within a week. I wonder if it could be the muscles in that eye becoming slightly weaker and being painful when your pupil does whatever the opposite of dilate is to stop too much light getting in. I get a lot of pain on one of my eyes but that's due to having a couple of surgeries on it. I hope you get it sorted on 6th ![]()

"Haven't they given at least an indication of what the appointment is for ?" No. Just the standard all-purpose appointment letter.

" Have they told you not to drive as you may have drops to dilate your pupil? " No. Just a no-driving warning about the possibility of drops during the examination.

" They will probably be the drops I mentioned. Take dark glasses because you'll be very sensitive to light if you do have drops. ![]()

"The eye pain has gone! But I’m still going to see my optician because something was wrong, and it could recur. I dislike wasting time and money listening to useless recorded messages. If I contact the NHS 111 service, would I be able to speak to an actual person who is an eye specialist? If so, I feel that the advice I would receive could be no better than which I have received here. " You wouldn't speak to an opthalmologist but you would speak to someone who knew the next proper course of action...eventually ![]()

General Dr...You usually have to wait an hour or 2 & they'll call you back. They can definitely point you in the right direction.

But people with general medical training are going to be better than a forum here. Chemists have fantastic medical knowledge too and are available free 7 days a week

"Thank you everyone. I’ll wait to see my optician. He will be able to do some sort of detailed examination and will recognise any problems. Anyone else would just be guessing. " I think that's wise. They're very knowledgeable

"The pain stopped on Sunday. I’ve seen my optician, and he found nothing wrong. He said I should keep the hospital appointment, as they have diagnostic equipment. He sold me a new pair of reading glasses, of course! " Of course! ![]()
