Do you tip in a restaurant?

Do you tip without hesitation?

Do you only tip exceptional service?

Do you ask for the service charge to be deducted from the bill if it’s added automatically and choose if to tip or not?

Most places in Edinburgh add 12.5% service charge. The only time I ask for it to be removed is when they do it at the bar, when you’ve walked up, ordered and carry your own drinks to the table.

I tip the standard 10% just because I feel I have to nowadays 🤷🏽‍♂️ Even though sometimes the service has been pretty poor.

I like to tip generously if I have received exceptional service or the person has added to my experience,equally I am loath to tip a bad or grumpy server.

A dilemma occurs if the product/food isn't great ,however the server is.

Sometimes, but never as much here as in the US. I realised that waiting staff over there were on absolutely crap wages, and mostly lived on tips. So you get your own personal waiter/waitress, who will serve you throughout your visit. When you leave your tip it is directly to that specific person. The normal rate, or so I’m led to believe is twenty percent of what you spend on dinner. I’m happy enough to pay that, even did when there was six of us…

I don't think I've ever eaten in a place where there is a automatic service charge.

If there was I wouldn't tip.

I don't even know how to tip on a card transaction so it will only ever be a cash tip and is usually 10%.

In places I go to regularly and know the staff I always tip because the service is always excellent.

In other places it can depend on how friendly the staff are, the quality of food and service and also whether or not I am carrying cash.

Restaurants and cafes are the only places I tip.

I tip proportionately to the service.

If they do not leave it to my discretion, then they will get no more than that.

I tend not to engage with businesses that add things on to the bill - they haven't been clear about at the start. So it's probably the last time I will frequent their establishment - if that is the case.

Or the food would have to be so exceptional that I would abandon my principles. 😁

I do tip. Unless there is a service charge for being presumptious 😝 then I just pay it and that’s it.

I tip food delivery people- Deliveroo was a lifeline for me when I was bedbound/housebound so I tipped generously.

There is a lovely waitress at the restaurant we often go. She always chats for a bit, was very concerned when she saw me in a wheelchair, etc- she is a single mum working hard. She gets a 25% tip every time. ☺️

I don't particularly want to tip people for doing their job, but 90% of the time I'll chuck a quid on the table for the waiter/waitress at a restaurant, I don't tip cabbies because their prices are extortionate (plus I wouldn't tip any other transport operators, train driver, bus driver, captain of a cruise liner etc). I use to give my hairdresser a few pounds extra, until he upped his prices by a 3rd, now I shave my own hair.
