My neighbour has great fun with these calls, plays the technology idiot very well. Keeps them on the line for ages getting them to go through each step many times, accidentally pushing the wrong keys till they want to scream, then points out he is a computer engineer and knows exactly what they are trying to do

My elderly parents got caught by this. It really upset my Mum as she was the one who spoke to them and paid money to them. She rang me afterwards and I told get to just pull the plug. I spoke to the guy on the phone when he rang to ask why she'd switched her computer off and he told me I was rude.....utter, utter bastard he made my Mum cry and that is unforgivable. The police were not terribly interested really.

That is awful!

I don't understand how this hoax is still going? They have been doing this for a good few years now.

i like to play games with them a bit like your neighbour as its far more fun than just hanging up on them

strange thing is they sound really surprised when you thank them for phoning up to solve your problem !

They are a pain though, I strang one along for ages!! Then after a long arse time explained that I actually had a mac and don't use Microsoft and was fully aware what the theifing low life scum were doing, the guy was so pissed that he then called my phone every day for 6 months till I changed my number, they are an absolute pest and there is little that can be done as they are calling on a international number x

Actually I run a computer shop and it's surprising how often people are caught out by this scam, though many people don't actually pay, a surprising number do and they aren't all elderly.

For anyone not aware of how it works, if anyone phones you up, especially purporting to be from Microsoft saying you have some very bad viruses on your computer, hang up on them or at least play a game with them if you wish, but never allow them to connect onto your computer. Thier tale plays on our emotions saying that they've become aware of you having the sort of stuff that we know we wouldn't want on our computers, like peaodophilia etc and if you do connect it shows web names that make you think the tale is true.

They are clearly convincing to some, and if they do connect to your computer they almost always leave tracking software behind enabling them to potentially gain access to potentially valuable data on your computer.

Yes they left Teamviewer on my parents pc. Luckily we are fairly computer savvy and were able to sort it ourselves and the bank refunded the money they had paid. What really concerned me was that the first police officer I spoke to told me they were genuine...I soon put him right!

My mum was scared for a long time that they had her address and would come and beat her and my dad up, this sort of thing isn't a joke they cause real distress to elderly people especially.
