keyless cars

So I was chatting with a girlie friend and she has ordered her new car,

Key-less entry and start. (the ad where as long as you know your keys are in your handbag you can get in and drive home)

Anyways It's being delivered next week, so she got on the phone to her insurance company. They then declined her insurance on the new car (Big company, 12 years no claims, stayed loyal)

Reason given was because she parks her car on her drive at the front of her house and keeps her keys in the house

Now call me daft but surely you can lock the car so as the key less bit is switched off? I will ask her this later but I didnt think of it at the time

It raises a point though, can someone walk up to your car, open the door and help themselves to anything in it; if you've got your keys in the livingroom or close enough to have the car unlocked? Her bedroom, like mine is, is at the back of the house and the cars get parked out front

If its like my friends car, when he took the keys in the house leaving me in the car it automatically locked itself and switched off the engine after a couple of minutes so I'd say no plus surely she would lock it when she got out

I used to have a Renault (shameful - I know!) with this facility and yes - if I left the keys in my coat by the front door I could walk up to the car and unlock it.

Not great but you could disable the function manually - but that was a ball ache!

theoretically you could also start the engine - but wouldn't get far as it would soon cut out when far enough from the key.

Never heard of insurance companies declining though - she should speak to the dealer for advice!

I didn't buy a Nissan juke for exactly that reason - the model was keyless.

I'm blonde......I never even thought of the locking/unlocking scenarios......they explained you just needed to have the 'key' on your person and that was it - i'd lose it in seconds or leave it in the car astray and walk off

I was just thinking the same, I have so many handbags and if shifting my handbag with the key in it unlocks it

Or I just start going out with a large selection of handbags

I've heard it all insurance refused for keyless cars. I have 2 keyless cars now and yes I'm a woman and both of them you had to be within 2 feet of the car for the keyless activation to work and the engine wouldn't start unless the fob is actually in the car itself

how ridiculous.....i park my car in front of my house and keep the keys in the house, where is she supposed to keep them?

i'm prety sure they have quite a close radius to the car. My sister has keyless entry on her Suzuki and obviously has insurance so the company is talking rubbish.

in the past 10 yrs my ex has had 2 meaganes 2 lagunas no probs with insurance

when i drove them i used to lock house up then put key in my pocket and drive off

with key in pocket unless the car asked for it .

so must be either a new thing or the insurer x

Someone is misinformed you need to be within a minimum of 8ft most its 5 ft of the outside of the door handle in an arc. Unless you are parked next to your lounge window with the keys on the inside windowsill its not going to happen and insurance companies know this too.

So no key less one for me then, My keys live on the inside of the front door (as a rule)and I can practically open my front door and touch my car, yes my lounge is also on the front

I'll ask her when I speak to her next but at my house that really would be an issue, especially if one of the kids moves the keys
