Are we afraid of confrontation

A post in another thread has just had me wondering.................

If you witness crime, vandalism, bullying or something similar........do you step in to stop it or do we not anymore for fear of retribution.

An example. In my street, I saw a young lad getting a kicking from 3 other 'yoofs' now my first instinct is to step in, break up the scrap and help the poor kid. After that thought process has elapsed I decline the notion because said 'yoofs' will see which house I've come from and may offer reprisals at some point in the future.

What are your experiences n thoughts.

I was at a local petrol station a while back and two motorists started a very aggressive discussion which was heading towards becoming a fight. I just shouted "Wtahc out for the car behind you" at whcih point they both turned round to look and it seemed to stop them in their tracks. Perhaps that was just lucky but sometimes it helps to just offer a distraction to the warring parties.

I would step in always to help anyone regardless but I can understand why people are afraid to for whatever reason

As a single lady and usually with kids in tow, sadly I would stay away/get away.

I would ring someone though and if it looked serious then I would raise the alarm, but the last thing I need is to bring trouble to my door.

Sadly Im a neighbour hood watch street co-ordinator so have contact numbers for most of our street, I would let the men on our street deal with it *runs and ducks for cover*

I can't help myself but to intervene, I don't think of my own safety or anything else. I've yet to have any "comeback" in these situations

My instincts go to work before my brain has processed it. I would automatically jump in with out thinking. But i was manageress of a bar for a good few years so was good at defusing a situation and breaking up fights. I dont get intimidated either, if someone was to threaten me id just say go for it, usually well always for me they have backed down

I would like to think i would get involved if i thought necessary and have done a couple of times.

Something happened to my son a little while ago and a lovely couple came from their home and got involved called an ambulance and contacted the police and they are now standing as witnesses for him.

And if it had not have been for them and his brother god knows what the outcome had been... So i am glad there still are people who will.

I was going into a newsagents and just as I entered, three youths in hoodies tried dashing past me to get out. The shopkeeper shouted for help, he'd been robbed. I grabbed one of the youths, during the struggle he lashed out at my face. I restrained him on the floor while the shopkeeper called for the police.

While waiting I realised the youth had broken one of my front teeth. That's when it started to hurt!.

Anyway, cops came cuffed the youth and searched him. They found a small knife in his jogging bottoms pocket. Luckily, he hadn't had time to bring it out and use it.

Would I do the same again? Yes.

Why? I don't like low lifes trying to rob people of an honest day's earnings, and making them frightened to continue working.

The shopkeeper wanted to pay for my dental treatment but I refused, if I pop in there at any time my newspaper is always free!

I was once in the bank when it was robbed. im a big strong rugby guy and always thought id jump in and help.

the robbers tried to get the Securicor box and the poor guy couldn't open it so they threw it on the ground and started firing at it. I was 2-3 mtrs away. my friend works in the bank and according to the cctv I just stood ther the whole time with my mouth wide open. when I was interviewed by the police the only thing I could describe was the gun!!

I don't think you know what you'd do until you get there!

This is just the example I was kinda thinking about. Like you I doubt I could have stepped in, self preservation would have been telling me they could turn the gun on me if I intervene.

I wouldnt do it.

They can see which house I went into. But if they choose to knock my door they better be waving a white flag as high as I can see it.

Oh..I also have two 5 stone alsations...so you know...one (saracen) is an ex police dog. So wouldnt be smart.

All else asside. I think sometimes its just the right thing to do.

To be a little clearer which I should have put to begin with, authorities were informed but I'm not jumping into a melee with reckless abandon either. I'm all for helping out but I don't fancy a kicking or possibly worse..........

Being a confident individual who alsa happens to be a sturdy looking bloke, I have often stepped in when coming across antisocial behaviour….

But as the years advance, I must confess to now tempering the frequency of my interventions with a desecration towards my own safety…

I broke up a fight once... Some guy was beating his partner.. not one of the guys witnessing it dared step in on the domestic... However I couldn't not do..

I have however been victim because I stepped in at other times. I stopped a lad getting bullied on my street and have had reprisals for years... But I still maintain I did the right thing.

i could not stand there let a person or a animal get hurt .. I would be on my phone 999 and sceaming and no telling i dont get mad alot last time i did i was 14 he end up getting his mum after me .

I couldn't walk away from that, I have to be honest im the type of person who jumps in first then realises it wasn't the best move after

there's no way I could turn my back on a kids being beat up by 3 others and sleep at night, even if I got a thump myself I would have to at least try to help

Even if my window's got put thro a window isn't as important as someone's safty and I really would when put on the spot make making that kids was ok my first priority

This is one of the reasons why there are so many cases of domestic violence still people ignore it

that's why i put as a general rule of thumb. If he had her on the floor battering her its a bit different to a heated debate where he's in her face etc

see my above post. Stepping in depends on a number of situations;

location

is alcohol involved

in more inclined to make a call to the police if neighbours are involved than two randoms in the street for example.

I'm not afraid of confrontation at all. I don't like to see arguements between friend, relatives and loved ones and will step in without hesitation.

But if I see an argument in the street between two strangers I'm less likely to step in especially after an incident in my town not so long ago.

A Middle Aged man in my town witnesd a very heated discussion in town, infront of shoppers and young kids in which several youths were swearing veminantly at each other and kicking the living sh!t out of each other, for him to step in and voice his opinions on there choice words infront of daily shoppers, and get stabbed by one of the lads and told to back the F off or get stabbed again. Luckily this was all caught on CCTV. And the middle aged gent survived and the lads arrested.

Lots of guys puff up and say they will, the think ones will actually walk out of their front door and lay into what are probably minors. The intelligent ones will cross the road get their phone out and record the incident and shout at the youths. In reality touching a minor is a bag full of trouble no matter who you are.
