We're plagued with them. One has just walked down our drive in a temper and ripped off the sign stating "no scrap".

What can you do?

Blame the rise in scrap metal prices. £150-£200 a tonne depending where one goes. I collect scrap in my line of work which pays a lovely bonus at the end of the month.

.

Last year replaced our bathroom suite, guy came down the drive and asked if we'd renewed the piping, I said of course we had. He said he would take the old stuff away, I said ok

He took the bath, sink and loo and asked where the copper piping was.

I told him at the scrap metal merchants, I wasn't that stupid, as working with copper wiring I know the value of the stuff.

He just looked at me, rolled his eyes and left. Saved me a trip to the tip, thank you very much

Mr notts says I have to be careful because they have no morals and they don't care. I think he's worried if we do anything they'll be back again looking for more than just old metal.....

We have up to 3 a day here and whenever I hear them coming, if i'm outside with the gate open I shut it so they can't see into the garden. I also take any scrap myself to the tip or to be weighed in, depending on what it is- If I can get some extra cash- bonus, if it means they don't- double bonus .

I've also had them poking round the drive when i've put stuff out to take to the tip when doing DIY, nothing valuable but if there was and they took it then its theft. As I now have a top notch CCTV system covering all access to the house (including one to record faces and number plates) they'd be stupid to try now

Could have been a burglar wanting to know if you were in. Do you have anything lying in your drive that could have been of use to them

They are a pain in the arse where we live, they just come on your garden and take what they like, the amount of times they have jumped my fence and left the back gate open when they leave so when I let the dogs out they see the open gate and run for it is unreal, they don't seem to have any rules where I live it really does seem that if its on your garden its their's, they have taken my kids bikes and alsorts without asking

They have even been on my garden while the dogs are out and still left the gate open and let my dogs out, ive had to resort to putting a big pad lock on my gate, not to stop them getting on the garden but to stop them getting out via the gate, its lenths you really shouldn't have to go to

CCTV was following an unrelated theft but was relatively cheap as I know people in the trade and fitted it myself (also put it through the business account so its all deductible)

If its in my garden it's still my property!! You dont just go round taking things from people's gardens!! Someone I knew got an old fashioned wheel barrow from an auction to use as a planter for the garden and the scrap metal brigade took it from the front garden (which had a fence and a closed gate) without asking. Luckily as they were further up the street the person had rang the police and they got caught and done for theft. Bloody right too!!

I had some scrap in my front garden once which I was gonna tags to the dump, a guy knocked on my door and ASKED if he could take it. That's the correct way. Very polite bloke he was.

on one occasion a couple of these guys ventured into my back garden to have a look around, looking from inside I was a little surprised that they just decided to go round the back on there own accord, i wasnt worried as i knew they would not be able to take anything,my rottweiler was out there having a nap, when he woke to greet them one of the guys lept over a 6ft fence into the neighbours garden and the other jumped up on to the top of the shed roof shouting for help it was hilarious

the problem is what people like you class as scrap and what I class as scrap isn't the same, my kids bikes was taken off my yard by the scrap man, that's not taking scrap, going on someone's yard and taking children's bikes is plain old fashioned theft and having a van to threw throw them on does not put you above the law, nor does it give you the rights to just wonder onto peoples yards to take a look at what you may want to take

Your idea of scrap is anything of value that's not tied down

Lets turn it around then.

You pull up by someone house, get out your van and wander around looking for scrap and someone decides to take your van and weigh it in.....are we still happy?

Just had one round the estate, it's not as bad as it used to be here, 6 in one day is the most that ever came round and when you told them 'their mates' had just been round would often get pretty pissed. Now a days we get one every couple of weeks just cruising down the street having a damn good nosey.

My son left a micro scooter in his dads driveway, his uncle had not long since bought it & as it was a 'stunt' scooter, it was £130 (ridiculous I know!).

Anyway, the scrap metal collectors just took it out of the driveway, luckily his dad has CCTV and got the number off the van. A phone call later, they said they'd only return it if we bought it back off them for £20.

Cheeky feckers, son had to part with his pocket money & the scooter was wrecked.

Stand in your living room window holding an air rifle, it looks like the real thing from a distance. And if they still ask, tell them you have some lead that you want to get rid of very quickly.

if you knew who had took it and had proof and the means to contact them why didn't you just call the police?

I had to get the police involved to get my kids bikes back, the police round here hate them because they get so many complaints about them, it is classed as theft and the police will get involved

I rescued a Victorian lamp post from a customers garden which builders had broken into three.

I found out how to rebuild the lamp casing and was working on a way of getting the cast iron stitch welded .

I came home and Mrs J said some pikeys had been asking what I was going to do with it and she told them it was a project of her husbands, that didn't bother them , they had nicked the lighter bit of the three.

Utter bastard scum !!!.

We have a man that comes round occasionally on his horse and cart ringing a bell. Which is fine as he knocks to ask before taking anything.

Then we have a few that go round in open back trucks that take anything not nailed down. I told some off the other week for trying to take some scaffolding poles off our driveway.

So glad i have cctv covering the whole place after a break in last year,if i remember correctly they have to have a license to collect scrap metal so would be worth asking to see the relevant documents first. If they have none or are you suspect they are prentending to have them then a call to pokey should get rid of them.

I have a local plumber who off-loads all of his old radiators and boilers on me and it`s a constant battle of wits trying to hide it/tie it down/whatever and has been for several years where I live.

Next time you`re listening to the radio and you hear the travel news of "signalling problems" on the railway, chances are that some scumbag has made off with a few hundred yards of copper signalling cable, probably by tying it to the back of a motorbike and just ripping it out!
