share a coffee

Anyone else come across this my local cafe as posters up about a scheme called share a coffee or something like tgat.

Basically folk can pay for a brew or even food so that someone less fortunate and in need can get a brew etc. I see it as extension of food banks and am in favour of this on a number of fronts.

Mainly because most folk will have come across folk in need at some stage. I refuse to give folk asking for money anything but willingly buy them a brew this catches out those just after money for drink and drugs.

I spoke to cafe owner and asked they would know those in need they said they know the locals in need and those just after money so i think it can work.

You've been able to suspend a coffee over in the US for a while.

I don't like coffee, it's nice when I go with friends to still pay for one and suspend it. Rather someone drink it who needs it than buy a hot chocolate I don't want to just be social

What a great idea, hope it catches on. I no the Salvation Army are going great guns at the moment trying to help. A couple of quid to most is affordable but to those in need it is a bit of warmth.

Great idea but sad that in this day and age it is taking off and needed if this how cameron sees the big society then god help us i see it as needed but should not be.

phewww see now I'd chuck a few quid in a pot for someone to have a coffee but I certainly wouldn't share mine...

I've shared a helluva lot on here but my coffee

I'm liking the sound of this....but how do the less fortunate people go about benefiting from it?

Ie - Do they just wander upto the counter and ask if they have any suspended coffees?

This has been going on for a while in the US and that's where i got the idea from for a collection pot at my brothers chip shop!

We started off only being able to afford providing food at the end of each month, it's been such a great success that we're now able to provide just over a hundred homeless people in Brum with food at the local shelter every week!!

There have always been people on the street not just during the current times.

Not sure why you have made such a political comment as this is about helping people however in fact there are less people on the streets in London now than during the Blair/Brown days.

Yep , as is rightly pointed out it is very big in America and is called suspended coffee, the story goes that anyone can go into a coffee shop and order. I e "three coffees , two to go and one suspended". The third cup is placed ( empty) by the till, when a person in need then asks if there are any suspended coffees , if there's an empty by the till they are given a hot drink, the same is done for sandwiches too, to save embarrassment, sometimes on seeing a less fortunate person enter the shop the server will pick up the suspended cup and ask them if they would like a coffee , it's an anonymous way of feeling good about giving , it works well in America . That's not to say it will work well over here though. Peoples attitudes are much different in the UK , the suspended drink is run through the till as normal though, so it should stop dishonest cafe workers pocketing the cash.
