Yes we know we can google etc - but you often get the best finds from people!

Wear trainers.

You need comfy shoes if you’re sightseeing, shopping or walking from A to B.

Ask your Hotel concierge which parts of town are not safe to venture into after dark. Things like Central Park after dark weren’t advised when I last went there.

Not sure if you’re looking for swinging related or vanilla. I can’t help either the former but recommend the Tenement Museum at Delancey and Orchard St.

They do walking tours now too which I think would be interesting.

I can tell you the best route in depending on which airport you are landing at.. I am never paying 100 dollars for a cab from JFK!

You’ll find lots of good eats … absolutely recommend katz deli!!

New York for the first time is an amazing experience, you'll have a great time.

Take the subway out to Brooklyn and walk back into Manhatten across the Brooklyn Bridge - as the Bridge rises you see the whole Island reveal itself.

Try and see a Broadway Show or a live band downtown.

Dim sum for breakfast in Chinatown. Late night pizza from a local cornet joint.

Cocktail bar at Grand Central Station in the evening.

You might find yourself casually just walking past a few famous sights that have appeared in films like Ghostbusters etc. that blows your mind a bit.

I remember getting excited when I saw my first Yellow taxi up close and personal, so make sure you have a camera with you!

A few people have said about a show! But it seems a waste of a few hours in a new place?

I always say to people if you are staying in midtown or west side… it’s actually easier getting into New York by flying into Newark

Only if you are staying in the east side, or on Long Island the fly into JFK

Actually.. I’m always nosey and ask which airline people fly with.. because some transatlantic operators are better than others…

I have definitely turned more snooty in my old age

Go to Jimmy's Corner (bar next to Times Square)- great place

Don't forget to visit other boroughs besides Manhattan like Brooklyn (Bushwick, Coney Island etc)

Book rooftop viewing (The Edge is cool) for sunset times to get the best view

There are some very interesting walking tours

Take the Staten Island ferry for free and see the Statue of Liberty- BUT avoid the scammers outside who insist you need a ticket and they’ll sell it to you (you don’t).

I love Bryant Park, (more like a square) almost in front of Macy’s. Lovely to stop there for a coffee, a mulled cider and a sit down watching the world go by.

Washington Square is also awesome for people watching and street performers.

Definitely agree with the Staten Island ferry, although it's worth paying for the actual Statue ticket of you want to see Ellis Island - I found that very interesting

But I would also add do a behind the scenes tour of Radio City Music Hall the art deco architecture is stunning.

Or even get tickets for a show there.

The best skyscraper view is from Summit at One Vanderbilt (essentially Grand Central station), 3 levels of viewing platform (including a cocktail bar on the top) with views of the Chrysler building, Empire State Building and Central Park and in clear weather all the way south to 1 WTC. If you can, book a time 30-45 minutes before sunset. Once you’re in you can stay as long as it’s open and the sunset views are incredible.

Intrepid air and space museum is a fascinating museum based on an old aircraft carrier, if you go do the tour of the nuclear sub Growler first before the queue gets too long.

The Highline is a nice garden walkway built on the old elevated train tracks on the West side of Manhattan

Wear comfy shoes - trainers or walking shoes

If you want to see a show and aren't too bothered about what you see, there are a couple of booths across the city that sell discounted tickets on the day.

Take ID if you want to go to a bar even if you're clearly 40 years old.

There is a pass you can buy that gives you tickets to several of the major attractions for cheap. Works out great if you are visiting a few of them (not worth it if you only go to a couple).

Here be barr is a great youtube channel with tons of tips for first time vistor to NYC.

I found him after I visited tho.

As other said warm comfy shoe, as you will walk alot, depending on how many days your stay, the New York pass gets you into alot of attractions.

Try going to ground zero early as its so surreal and peaceful there around 7am, observations decks I'd say Top of the rock as you look north you can see all of central park and south has a great view of the empire state building.
