What did we do before the internet?

Bridgwater - Somerset

"Everyone knows that the Internet is changing our lives, mostly because someone in the media has uttered that exact phrase every single day since 1993. However, it certainly appears that the main thing the Internet has accomplished is the normalization of amateur pornography. There is no justification for the amount of naked people on the World Wide Web, many of whom are clearly (clearly!) doing so for non-monetary reasons. Where were these people fifteen years ago? Were there really millions of women in 1986 turning to their husbands and saying, 'You know, I would love to have total strangers masturbate to images of me deep-throating a titanium dildo, but there's simply no medium for that kind of entertainment. I guess we'll just have to sit here and watch Falcon Crest again."

Quote from Chuck Klosterman - discuss?

Lots of "TOP SHELF" magazines had a readers wives section.

Just like the contact magazines, they are also now online.

Digital instant pics, or Video cameras hadnt been invented.

Your sexy pics had to be sent off, or taken to your local Chemist.

Now you can do it all instantly, and in private.

I think the internet opened the world up for a lot of people. Before that they probably thought they were the only people that had the fantasies they did. All of a sudden people could find others that were into the same as them.

I wonder what the timewasters did pre-internet?

"We used Desire and the LOOT...both for meeting people."

It was LOOT that first got me into swinging. I (Rob) met a couple from an advert in there, had a couple of nice meetings and they told me about the Adam & Eve swinger club, I think it was the only one in the UK back then (1987 ish). I didn't know that such things things existed, so I started going there regularly and I've been swinging on and off both as a single guy and now as a couple with my second long term partner ever since. I have to admit though that buying my 1st PC in 1999 made life much easier.

The internet has existed since just after World War II. The World Wide Web was launched in the early 90's.

Personally I would like to thank the internet for LOLs and troll face.

Where did you get that from?

Tim Berners-Lee used hypertext protocol to share files across computers at CERN in 1989/1990, thus inventing the what would later be known as the World Wide Web.

He did not patent his invention/idea so that the world could benefit from it and it wasn't until around 1996 before anyone other than academics started to use the Internet.

I still have many of the Porn mags I bought 30+ years ago. It was very daring to reach for that top shelf (being 5ft made it harder), trying to be discreet, looking over your shoulder to make sure nobody was looking, holding the mag cover page down all the way to the counter, sliding it across to the shop assistant with burning cheeks (not those ones ), keeping eyes low, quickly handind your money and running outside as quickly as possible in a dignified manner...ahhhhhh! The good old days of reading porn!

Ok, yes, technically. The Internet is the infrastructure not the content.

But back then it really was just a large network used by institutions such as MIT and CERN etc. It was nothing like the Internet we know today.

I've been using it at home since 1994, and the web was around then.

Prior to that there was Usenet, email, FTP and Gopher (among others), and there was a thriving community of normal users.

Yes, it's different now, but it's changing all the time.

Exactly, post 1990!

I've been using it since '96 and it was pretty sparse back then.

Its only over the past decade or so with the introduction of fibre optic broadband and small cheap computers that it's really taken off in a big way.

I can vouch for this. I was downloading hamburger shots from the University of Pisa with Gopher and Usenet in about 1989. Some of the pictures still haven't fully downloaded.

The web was sparse but IRC, Gopher etc. were extremely active.

My point really was that the Internet is not the Web, and many people confuse the two.

Although working on completely different protocols to the internet we know today, it is generally accepted that the nearest precursor to the modern internet is the system being used by the US military (specifically the US Navy) as far back as 1958.

Yep. We used to have them handed around at school Lol! The I always remember - and the one which sparked my interest in erotic fiction - was called Experience (dunno if anyone remembers is from the mid-70's). I think all the porn mags had contact sections in those days, and it sometimes took weeks to get a response if you replied to an ad. Tried that once with my then fiance in the early 80's when we wanted to try the lifestyle, but got so frustrated at how long it all took!
