"Being reported on the radio that Sir Alex is stepping down and David Moyes is the one to be taking over. " It won't be for a few seasons yet hopefully but I think the rumour was that Moyes would come in as number two and take over from there, personally I can't see it Moyes is a great manager he wouldn't want to be a number two

"If Fergie retires will Howard Webb retire as well???? " Will they give him a carriage clock as a retirement gift... that has 66 minutes to the hour? A great manager, but a two faced wanker as well

"Mourinio hasn't gone to Chelsea yet, will he stick 2 fingers up at the Russian who sacked him and go to united" Chelsea fan here. I would not blame Jose at all if he did snub Chelsea for the United job. I would love to see Moyes take the job. He is an excellent manager and Id like to see what he can achieve with a few quid to spend. Whoever takes over will be under intense scrutiny.

"How is this newsworthy he is just a football team manager its not life or death folks." As another great manager said Football's not a matter of life and death ... it's more important than that,” To some people it is

Was said tongue in cheek as he doesn't show any signs of retiring soon which im sure alot of fans of other inferior clubs would like! Lol...but in many ways his records and achievements will be immortal as when he finishes eventually(sometime in the year 3013!) he will be regarded as the best manager of all

"How is this newsworthy he is just a football team manager its not life or death folks." For some it is. Man Utd success since he's been at the club is unprecedented and will provably never be repeated by any other manager. Btw I am not a Man Utd fan.

"How is this newsworthy he is just a football team manager its not life or death folks. For some it is. Man Utd success since he's been at the club is unprecedented and will provably never be repeated by any other manager. Btw I am not a Man Utd fan." Today's football clubs are driven by money and the desire for instant success. Some may see that Manchester United seem to be dripping in money and trophies and wish their club to be the same. They hire and fire managers at will and do not stop to think about why MUFC are so successful. It is about having a firm base of players and having the respect of the players, plus the manager having the trust of the club's owners to leave him alone to achieve as much as possible both on and off the pitch. Fergie had that trust. His success at Aberdeen stood him in good stead when he was taken on board by MU. Look what has happened at Aberdeen since he left - nothing but a gradual decline not helped by a succession of managers there. Man Utd were a good team before Fergie took over but he installed the same ethics he had at Aberdeen and things got better from then onwards. Not overnight but a gradual build up and some shrewd transfer dealings. I am in no way a Man U supporter and do not really like Fergie, but he is undeniably the greatest manager of all time in British football. I hope we can get a manager of a similar ilk to take over at my hometown club - Doncaster Rovers!!

"moyes to Schalke.... Mourinho to United, Hiddink possibly coming back to chelsea??? " fergie will be 'upstairs', not sure how Mourinho would take that.. think it will be someone who is out of the blue (pardon the pun).. someone who has done similar to what fergie did in Scotland, minimal resources etc..

"All reasonable people will recognise Ferguson as being the greatest club manager certainly of the modern game probably in history. I just feel lucky to have lived through his tenure at United as a fan. I didn't see the Busby Babes play, but in years to come I will be able to say I was there when Fergie ran things. Yes, it's a big deal to true football fans, especially United. Thank you Alex. "
