Automatic or manual car?

Which do you prefer and why?

Automatic without question. It's just less hassle in towns and city's where you have a lot of sitting around at traffic lights.

Bedford

Depends. If it’s something small and zingy on the B road of your dreams then a manual adds to the sense of occasion.

If it’s trundling through the rush hour commute, an auto is much better.

I used to be a die hard manual advocate but since owning performance BMW's recently I fell in love with the ZF eight speed auto box. Had my gearbox remapped and it's so much easier to flip up through the paddles now rather than maual.

Having never driven an automatic, I have to say manual. But I won't rule out trying an automatic one day

If you are using paddles to change gear then surely that is with it in ‘manual’ mode, if it was in ‘automatic’ mode you wouldn’t have to.

All over

Never thought I would like auto and was always manual. An hour after I got on auto and took to it so well and would never go back to mannual now even though still happy to drive one when needed.

While I've mostly driven manual, it is a pleasure to drive an automatic when I hire a car. It's just easier.

Well technically yes I suppose you could still class that action as manual but it's easier and faster not having to engage a clutch though.

I was brought up on manual vehicles, then for some reason I bought an auto of a mate ,a ford Orion ghia, 3 speed and it was absolutely shite, I didn't keep it long and went back to manual,I drive hgvs for a living which were predominantly manual boxes years ago and they had anywhere from 6 to 18 gears with splitters and some are a work of art to drive but after 10 or 12 or so a day driving them going up and down the gears i hated driving home after work in car in stop start traffic, some time ago I bought a big vehicle with an automatic box, 8 speed , it's absolutely heaven , far more advanced from the shit 3 speed ones of years ago, since then nearly all bigger trucks come with auto boxes as standard , mine now has 15 forward and 4 reverse fully auto with the option to drive it manually if I like and it makes my day and job far easier, it's better than most cars, for real driving experience and for real experienced drivers a manual is out and out the best thing for enjoyment and full control but for regular driving and a far relaxing experience today's automatics are wonderful

Last two cars have been manual as they didn't do the spec/engine combo I wanted in auto. I do like autos though. Having said that a friend offered me his auto diesel estate and I was sorely tempted until I saw that the fuel consumption was around 10mpg worse than my current manual diesel.
