how we all experience things differently.

We went on holiday last October to a well recommended hotel with plenty of five star reviews and still can't decide if the people who left them were deluded or staying at a completely different hotel 🤣. Our experience of the place left much to be desired.

Have you had experiences where things just haven't matched the hype?

Haha yes I had this conversation with a friend recently. I’ve noticed so many things are being lauded as incredible by so many people I know - then when I experience them they turn out to be average. It’s happened with everything, from hotels, restaurants, movies, even cities and countries.

Is there an element of “the emperors new clothes” happening, where everyone is scared to voice their true opinion? Or do the general population have lower standards? Or are there crazy marketing campaigns happening that are genuinely swaying peoples minds?

I find it baffling and I’ve noticed it’s a lot more prevalent since 2020.

I do think that some people don't like to be seen to disagree with another person's opinion on an experience.

My mum was terrible for that. If someone she considered 'posh' liked something then so would she and complain like mad about it when she got home

I was living in London and had a job offer in Birmingham, I asked a few mates what they thought? And they all came back with why Birmingham? It's a shithole etc.

I took the job anyway and spent 2 years having the time of my life! I loved the people and the place,❤️

That experience taught me that I need to form my own opinion on things, that's for sure,😁

Yes, I met some well travelled people who had been to Marrakesh. I was planning a last minute trip there so didn't have time to do much research on where I was staying and spent time focusing on stuff to do instead. Unusually I was staying in a hotel.

The hotel however wasn't what I expected at all. It was as far removed from Morocco as you could get. Chips and nuggets at dinner kind of fayre. Definitely not what I'm interested in. However, clearly people are otherwise they wouldn't cater for that market. I was just surprised this couple I met recommended so highly - esp given I thought a lot of the clientele were rude to staff, ignorant and generally massive twats. Reviews i read after however say something quite different. 🤷‍♀️

In the west.

I don’t read reviews before I go anywhere, my tastes aren’t the same as Fred and Ginger from Dancyville.

But I have been told to go to a certain place as it is fantastic and very authentic but when I got there it was far from it. I don’t have egg, chips and beer for breakfast, to be fair it was local beer they were selling.

When I go to new places I have a kind of criteria that I use, close to transport hubs, cultural places and within walking distance of bars & restaurants.

I book directly from the accommodation providers website as well rather than a third party site as I think they are biased as well.

I met someone who’s name was Sugar Tits, happened to be Alan Sugar who wanted me to lick sugar off his tits (disclaimer this did not happen)

We had the opposite. Long weekend in Tenerife at a cheap all inclusive place. The online reviews made it sound like a cross between Shameless and Baghdad, with Jeffrey Dahmer as the chef and more insects than Starship Troopers.

We liked the place. Not 5* but it didnt claim to be and it was certainly not the bombsite full of creepy crawlies and salmonella that the reviews suggested.

We're looking to go back.

*plus there's a great swingers club 700m down the road. 😇😇😂😂

I once coated chicken breasts in custard powder as people were raving about the extra crispy and moist result. I'm either a terrible cook or custard powder and fried chicken breasts do not go together.

I’d say it was your cooking. Custard on a breast is just so goooooood.

All I can say is, it was a trifle unusual ()

Yep, including a meet on here years ago.

Well verified, but when I met him he totally left me cold and was nothing like the really good veries he had.

I always think it's similar with tv/fims, very subjective. Some I've seen with rave reviews and I've hated it or vice versa, mediocre reviews & I've loved it.

The biggest disappointment I had was in Florida before going I’d been reading reviews and watching YouTube videos on longhorns steak restaurant. I’d gotten that exited about it that it was what I was mostly looking forward to anyway it was absolutely terrible worst steak I’ve ever had in my life it was huge but tough as old boots and tasteless 😂 (mr)

Excellent 'isn't it funny' examples everyone.

I tried a certain brand of face cream that promised to reduce the loom of fine lines, the reviews bore this out. This was a year ago and I'm still waiting.

As someone who just lives a couple of hours away from the Giants Causeway and have been there numerous times, I don't get the appeal for foreign visitors.

I get the impression that many of them leave disappointed.

I've been on a few hiking trips abroad in recent years and after returning from one I read some reviews that others on the trip left for the hotel and some of the routes.

I was genuinely taken aback because my experience was 5 star in a 3 star hotel and the walks were stunning and the guide amazing but some of the reviews were the complete opposite and made it out to be like hell on earth.

Reminds me of the Grand Canyon. Nice but a bit naff. The route through Death Valley on the other hand was great, arid as hell but seeing Joshua Trees, Hells angels, and eventual rise of Vegas through a sunset was pretty memorable.

Wherever the wind takes me

Yeah, everybody raved about LA being great etc.

I found it pretty much like most Cities only a bit more smoggy.

Hollywood was a shithole and you should have seen my face when I saw where they held the Oscars. It looked like a Shopping Centre!

I was bitterly disappointed by LA. Pleasantly surprised by San Francisco though.

Regularly, regarding some of the swingers clubs. I have organised holidays for me and my partner around well-recommended clubs in UK and, unfortunately, at least two of those visits left me wondering whether we went to wrong places. I get that each event is different, but there were some things that were totally not event related that made us question the authenticity of at least some of the reviews.

Manchester (he/him)

I had an experience a bit like this at the weekend. I attended a fetish party in London with a partner, people had raved about the event on other sites.

When we arrived the club itself was great but the atmosphere was lacking and any public play was not allowed, sexual contact was limited to the dungeon or a small dark room, both of which had queues. Essentially the event was people parading around in their outfits and not really socialising

Had an all inclusive 5 star holiday in a hotel built previous year. Lots of bad reviews. And moans from current guests. It was great, 5 fantastic different restaurants. Great entertainment. Helpful staff.

We would like to try all inclusive but we don't do well in large hotels. I find it all a bit overwhelming. I also think I would come home about three stone heavier

My son, a day off his 18th birthday, couldn't help but make use of the free alcohol, as did his step dad. I was wiser . The younger ones loved the on tap Turkish delight, ice creams and biscuits.
