The last time I saw sexual intercourse live on stage was upstairs in Queen’s Castle, Patpong 2, way back in 1988. Long gone now!

Nowadays, “pussy shows” are put on as dance breaks in a few go-go bars. You have to spend an hour or two watching dancing in the bar between each act.

The best go-go bar for this is probably “Crazy House”, which is on Soi 23. Turn right at the two-lane end of Soi Cowboy, and it’s 10 metres along on the right. You’ll walk past another “show” bar on cowboy, “Lucky Star / Long Gun” on the right.

I’ve sent you a copy of my guide to the Bangkok red light district, which you may find useful.

Tourists arriving in Thailand on or after the 1st March must complete a “Thailand Digital Arrival Card” (TADC) form on line at:

https://tdac.immigration.go.th/arrival-card/#/home.

at least three days before their arrival. They must show the resulting confirmation email when they arrive in Thailand.

On the 19th April the website was up, but not fully functional. Android and iOS apps will become available.

Women are always “oppressed” by customers, employers, and their position in society. All of the time, in every country of the world, including the U.K. And they always have been.

The Thai sex workers choose their jobs. There is no coercion whatsoever. And there are plenty of vacancies for them in the tourist industry, factories and rice paddies. But these alternatives require WORK to be done. The bar performers just do shows, dance, drink, and have fun. And there’s always the chance that a foreigner will fall in love with them, marry them, and extract them (and their families) from their poverty trap.

Thailand is a poor country, and social security is far less effective than it is here in the U.K. Family life is much more important over there.

We all find the conditions in other societies disturbing, but learn to accept that we can’t change them, and that our way may not necessarily be the best in all respects. Thai people take care of their parents. How do you feel about banging yours up in a “Care” home?

I've only just seen your reply.

Yes, Thai people are lovely. Many peoples care for their families and the elderly (I'm not sure why you chose to bring that into things?!) And yes, lots of Thai sex workers do so freely.

It is regarded however, that those establishments offering ping pong shows, use women who aren't so free in their choices, and are exploited by sex traffickers. This very much exists in Bangkok and other places. Tourism brings about exploitation - be that elephants, women or whatever. My comment was about choosing your pastimes ethically, as you would in any country.

Enjoy the sunshine, cally

I saw a ping-pong and live sex show in Bangkok many years ago.

One of the acts was a female opening a bottle of with her pussy. She offered me the opened bottle. I don't like cola but felt obliged to take a drink from the perfumed bottle.

Thinking about going back to Thailand, but I know there have been many changes, not necessarily for the better, since I spent an enjoyable month there.

“It is regarded” by whom? The “show” bars are located amongst the other go-go bars in the red light district, and there is no evidence whatsoever that the “show” girls are treated in any way differently from the rest of the dancers. None of the published reports of police action against sex traffickers concern red light district bars. Ethically, go-go bars which stage shows are no different from those which don’t.

Incidentally, the shows don’t just involve ping-pong balls. You may also see cigarette smoking, dart shooting, bottle opening, strings of flowers and razor blades! Can you imagine how an exploiter could force a girl to do the razor show? Do the other girls in the bar tell the police about it, or do they stand around laughing and joking?

I have Thai family.

A little more insight to the way it is there possibly.

From talking to them, it is clearly that we cannot impose our society and way of life onto their country

It is very poor and they are working in whatever ways they can to live and support their families.

It's not our ideal or what we would want but it is how it is and will not change easily or soon.

Applying our ethics will not help them.

Having spent some time living and workinfin in Thailand my take is that it's overly simplistic to just say they are or aren't exploited as a whole group.

There's likely a range of individual experiences, but the overwhelming picture suggests that systemic factors create a very high risk of exploitation and coercion.

When you consider the economic vulnerability many of these women face, the illegal status of the shows (which makes them vulnerable and unprotected), and how much control others might have over their work, it seriously undermines the idea that participation is always a genuinely free choice.

While individual agency absolutely exists, I tend to agree with human rights groups and others who see this environment as inherently exploitative. It feels driven by the demands of sex tourism and enabled by a lack of legal safety nets.

To me, the heart of the disagreement seems to be between focusing on the difficult choices individuals make and acknowledging the powerful structures that limit those choices and can lead to exploitation.

I agree entirely.

It will be very difficult to improve it change anything from what I see.

The chasm between rich and poor us vast and corruption is huge and controlling there.

Even at government level it is incredibly corrupt.

It suits the powerful to keep everything as it is.

I could not live there I'm sure.

This isnt entirely correct. Sex shows and ping pong shows are not legal in Thailand and the women doing those jobs rarely make it out to doing other jobs due to the stigma.

Because those shows aren't legal then they fall into a grey area where they are run by organised crime gang's and overlooked by corrupt officials.

Supporting sex tourism is also supporting that power structure.

All of this information is freely available online for anyone who cares to scratch the surface and do a bit of research.

You can't rationalise exploiting indentured sex workers because 'we don't understand their culture'.

Pussy shows are easily accessible, but there are no swingers’ clubs. One is legal, one isn’t. Where’s the information that show performers “rarely make it out” available online? The one that I knew had hard rough hands. She’d been helping her family with the rice harvest.

Where online is the information that go-go bars that put on shows are run by crime gangs? The supposed corrupt officials wouldn’t overlook any criminal activity. They would extract bribes in the establish fashion. But this information isn’t available online.

The sex tourists support the local culture, not crime gang power structures.

Where online does it state that go-go bar pussy show girls are “Indentured”? And how do sex tourists “exploit” them? A sex tourist goes into a go-go bar, buys a drink and watches the dancers, and perhaps a show. He is enjoying a form of entertainment that isn’t available in most other countries, and providing a few locals with a source of easy money and hope for a better life. That’s the real-life rationalisation. But you won’t find it online either.

In January, 2000:

Nana Plaza had a total of 26 go-go bars: 18 of them girls, 7 katoey & 1 post-op TS.

Soi Cowboy had a total of 24 go-go bars, 22 of them girls & 2 katoey.

This is a very naive point of view. I’ve lived all over Asia and met a girl in Mongolia who was sixteen and was going to Thailand to “dance” to support her family. Gangs arrange visa, travel, accommodation. And these girls have to work to pay it off. The interest stacks up and they never pay it off. Often turning to drugs and getting in more debt.

Also met a 13 year old Hamong girl who spoke 6 languages and this was her life plan as her family couldn’t afford her to go to school after 14.

These girls are poor and exploited

The Girls in these bars are often underage and not from Thailand. You a delusional if you can convince yourself sex tourism is ok in any country!

I really think you need to do some reading and watch a few documentaries

Couldn’t agree more. Lived in Asia for 8 years. I remember talking to one of the girls. She said I was working in a department store. 50 hours per week for $50. In a bar I get a dollar for every drink that is bought for me and if I go with a customer I get between $50-80. I start work at 7pm and finish about 2am or earlier. If was definitely what she chose to do. A tough life but not a lot of options there.

What you’ve described is exploitation. The only option for her to earn a fair and decent wage is sex work! Doesn’t seem much of a choice or free will.

There are frequent reports of the police arresting gangs who traffic women to Bangkok and forced them to provide sexual services to clients. But the victims are very closely controlled. They are accompanied between their accommodation and clients’ hotel rooms. Under no circumstances are they allowed any contact with “outsiders”. There’s no way you’ll find any of them in Bangkok bars or massage parlours.

But there are plenty of girls from out in the sticks and from surrounding countries – Laos, Myanmar and Cambodia. They are all very much aware that sex tourism is more than just OK! It’s providing them with much more money than they can earn at home.

I have been exploited due to economical opportunities all of my working life – I’ve been an employee!

What I’m saying is that many non-Thai girls work in bars, the vast majority are of legal age, and they are sometimes happy and sometimes sad, just like you.

They are there by free will because they prefer relatively high paid bar work to jobs in factories, fields and the tourist industry, all of which involve actual physical labour, sometimes under a very hot sun.

So sex work is by no means the only option open to bar staff in Bangkok, or England.

Bars and hotel rooms are air condoned so us sex tourists don’t sweat a lot.

It's not how we would want it here.

But, what you are doing is applying our life and values to another country that does not have that way if life and is very unlikely that it ever will have.
