Has anyone done an extreme day trip?

It's my latest 'i want to do that' obsession, watched lots of people on YouTube showing their experience, watched a persons video where they flew to Spain and had McDonald's

I've enticed some of my friends to do an extreme day trip in November and at the moment cologne is winning in the where shall we go research but it will depend on flight costs nearer the time.

So has anyone on here done an EDT, where did you go? Was it fun or a nightmare, never to be repeated.

Or is it something you've thought about but like me haven't actually done, where would you pick to go?

I've done quite a few now and planning many more .

So far I've been on an EDT to

Paris

Dublin

Copenhagen

Ibiza

Rome

Geneva.

Venice

My plan for summer is to fill up a week of them. Go somewhere from each location every day .

I'm also hoping to do Barra from Glasgow to land on the beach!

They can get a bit addictive .

Had an interesting PM basically stating that concept of "extreme" day trips is pretentious, and basically just a social media flex. Anything under 8 hours is not extreme but with travelling far you'd have no time to experience the country so no substance to the travel.

Interested to know experienced EDT people's thoughts on this, as I haven't actually done one before.

In the west.

I read about this the other day. I didn’t realise that it was still a thing never mind that it was given a name. Years ago it when a certain low cost carrier operated more flights from Prestwick it was very easy to get the first flight in the morning then a late flight home to places like Paris. The flight times don’t always marry up now though.

I don’t think it’s a social media flex. People have been doing this for many years. Thomas Cook organised day trips to the Loughborough, this is considered to be the birth of modern tourism as we know it.

The only this that is SM related about it is the name EDT, but these people are really excursionists as they are not stay there for 24 hours or more.

There is a very active FB group that has lots of tips /ideas.

Personally I just don't get it - 1.5 hours to travel to the airport, an hour loitering around waiting for the flight, flying for 3+ hours..just to have 5-7 hours wandering around a city eating lunch and having beers, followed by loitering at airport, flying and traveling home again!

Lol that's basically what my mum's opinion was when I discussed it with her.

However my friend who is a nurse was really interested, she does 12 hour days and due to shift patterns she often has 3 or 4 days off and has often been spending her days off on her own, sitting on the sofa watching telly, realising it's a waste she actually booked an overnight 24hrs stay in Spain on her own, sometimes a change of scenery is excellent for recharging yourself

Right behind you…. Boo

I did it a couple of weeks ago to Valencia.

You can get the metro from the airport to the city centre in about 20 minutes. The city is quite compact so I had lunch in the old quarter. Visited the botanical garden, hired a bike and cycled along the river bed park to the beach for dinner. Then made my way back to the airport and home.

I do EDT's regularly from Birmingham and East Midlands airport. The key is not to treat them like a holiday more of a trip and do your research. A lot of flights can be bought cheaply last minute and always have a look on travel apps for last minute deals if you have no specific destination in mind. You aren't going to need a hotel so look at places to visit that are taxi and bus rides away from the airport as a lot of East European public transports are really cheap. My favourite one was a trip with a lady friend to Prague for an evening meal that literally cost us £86 each nit including food. We flew out early morning and flew back at 2 a.m. so just under 24 hours door to door.

I'm sorry everyone, but getting on a plane to fly somewhere for a day, just to have a trip there, is really bad for the environment. We should all be cutting down on travel like this, not doing it frivolously. Perhaps consider doing something less polluting? There must be fun alternatives.
