I just found out that to protect the silk, the cocoons – with the pupal still inside – are either submerged into boiling water or treated with hot air, steam, boiling the silkworms alive. 😭😭😭 never having silk again.

York

Apparently it takes 3,000 silkworms, more than 100 kg of mulberry leaves and 1,000 litres of water to produce 1 kg of silk so it's not great on the environment or in terms of animal suffering.

Although compared with other things we humans routinely do it's pretty low on the scale.

Before I knew all this my favourite sexy black shirt was made of silk. It eventually fell apart after many years of heavy use.

I now buy synthetic silk made from viscose/rayon or polyester but unfortunately it doesn't feel or look as nice as real silk.

Perhaps it might be best to make the best of a bad job and keep them as posh hankies.

One can't undo the past but one can change the future.

I had an ethically manufactured silk purse once, it was made from a sow's ear.
