dentistry.

We've consulted a private dentist for some time now, not for preference but because it's impossible to find a NHS practice that's taking new patients. The costs are huge aren't they! I'm not surprised people resort to doing their own dentistry.

yes I am in process of private dentist down here as I am still on waiting list with normal methods ..

I am just going to bite the bullet and pay the few hundred pounds to join up to a local private one ... they charge though for everything ,

join fee

assessment fee

hygienist fee

any work fee

I am debating on becoming a dentist myself as it seems it could be an extremely lucrative career

Even the price of NHS dental services is creeping up and up. I think a check up is due to rise another pound. I sat in the waiting room and timed visits. Rarely did each person emerge in more than five minutes. So 5 minutes per patient each hour, they are certainly taking a lot of money

My dentist practice does private work. Getting an appointment for that is no bother. For NHS stuff I book my next appointment 3 or six months in advance but that is for a check up, which is free, and the hygienist which I think is about £25.

Paying more and more getting less and less

And is it me but the standard of denist in particular

I had better work done way back in the 1970s where you sat in an old barbers chair without all these fancy cabinets and surgery lights and never had a problem

Yes. I have upcoming dental work. I had to take out a loan for it. It’s not even cosmetic dental work (which I wouldn’t be so bothered about the cost really), it’s necessary work to put right shoddy workmanship from the last (awful!) dentist I went to.

I never thought I’d hear a dentist say “I’ve never seen that before” whilst looking in my mouth!

I've not been able to get an nhs dentist for about 10/11 years.

I have to go a city about 20 miles away to see a private one..

(I only go about once a year though for a check up / clean ...& luckily I've not needed any procedure too expensive doing)

I'm an NHS patient and have the dentist next week.

Checkup and hygeinist one after the other will be £110.

I book every 6 months to make sure i'm not kicked off the list.

I think we in this country have become used to free health care so much. It is comparitive to other countries, i feel, such as America where all healthcare is chargeable and increasingly expensive

I on now it sounds and probably feels expensive but it isn’t just the dentist that is paid from that fee. There is try e dental nurse, reception staff and the cleaners amongst others.

My dentist is open 7 days a week with Sunday reserved for emergencies. He has appointments available up to 10pm and people travel from all over Ireland.

It's cheaper for someone down South to drive 5 or 6 hours and stay overnight either before or after their appointment than it is to go to their local dentist.

Mines gone private after 20 years + as NHS.

It's £16 a month, no joining fee, you get 2 check ups a year, 1 clean and 15% off any work which isn't much really.

You also pay as you go but it's £60 a check up and no discount. A clean is £85!!

3 fillings on a contract cost my husband £400

I think they government need to step in and cap things, dentists and bloody vets, they are also taking the piss.
