If I had to go back to an ancient civilisation as a woman, I'd pick Sparta. One of the least worst options? Trained up and honoured as the birther of soldiers, and if I die in childbirth, I'm honoured like a fallen soldier.

I genuinely would like to go to some of the ancient tribes (some still exist today, though you're not allowed anywhere near them). Where time does not exist, nor does capitalism... Just simply day and night...and by the way we're hungry,so go and catch something! It would be great to sit around a fire with the elders and have the trippy balls powder blasted up your nose by the shaman and go on a journey of vision, then talk about and interperate what I'd seen.

The Bronze Age Collapse.

Basically every one of the big Mediterranean civilisations - Phoenicians, Greeks, mycenians, Egyptians all kinda disappeared overnight and one reason was a disparate group of seaborn marauders called the sea peoples. They left hardly any archeological trace and nobody knows who they were or where they came from.

I'm going there.

I'm going to pick a civilization not mentioned on here yet and say the Carthiginians. Would love to have visited the Ancient city of Carthage. What were the people like? The culture? Read in full the exploits of Hanno the Navigator who was said to have explored the Western part of Africa in the 5th century BC. See how the Carthingians built their world famous Navy. So many things.

Alao what is interesting is that the concept of being a Queen didn't exist in Egypt at the time, so she referred to herself as a King and dressed up as a man.

There was an era when higher oxygen levels supercharged insect size, but it was the Permian, around 350-300 million years ago, quite a while before the dinosaurs, who came on the scene around 250 million years ago. 😊

Well that's interesting. We divide history into these boxes, but the reality is that cultural influences and practices persist and bleed into later cultures. Her field tended to cut off areas of study around the end of the 1st Century CE, whereas she always felt that the end of the 1st century CE was too early for that. She argued that Biblical Archaeology should encompass the Byzantine period, the rise of Islam and the Crusades.

Personally I'd probably put the end of the ancient era at the disintegration of the Western Roman Empire, if I had to put it anywhere. But I'm a software engineer, not an archaeologist or historian. And I can't ask my wife, I'm afraid, although I'm pretty sure she now has all the answers. 😌

Whilst it's a somewhat appealing fancy, the increased likelihood of being susceptible to health conditions, without the modern medical miracles that we have, I'm more inclined towards staying ignorant of how it used to be. They also have the 7 layered caste system, is that tolerant?

Which colonial empire or country are you referring to?

The Brits were the last, but by now means the first and neither was Europe the first continent to do so.

How many empires ruled India?

Several empires ruled over India throughout its ancient age. The Mahajanapada, Nanda, Maurya, Pandya, Chera, Chola, Pallava, and Chalukya kingdoms were just a few of the prominent dynasties that reigned over the Indian subcontinent for extended periods of time.

Which countries ruled over India?

Portuguese, Dutch, British, Danish, and French were the major European powers that ruled over India. These countries established their presence in different parts of India and played significant roles in shaping its history.

The concept of bisexuality means almost nothing in that period.

I feel like the Romans and Greeks had a love-hate relationship. Especially as Romans took heavily from Greek learning, philosophy and culture, whilst seeing Greeks as too soft compared to Romans. Or maybe I'm mistaken.

I'd go to the pre-1990's so can go to lots of gigs with NO mobile phones, just fans enjoying the music in the moment

Pre-Roman Britain, so I can ask the dude who carved the rock art behind my old house what it's meant to depict.

I think that's reasonable. The Roman elite took a lot from Greek culture, but looked down on what they regarded as immorality, particularly around sexuality.

Greek sexuality should not be romanticised either.

Mobile phones were a thing, they looked like a handset attached to a car battery, similar to Police motorbike radio setups.

They were a thing. A phone. And that was all. All you could do was ring up on them. Nothing else! Hehehe

OP are we going to be immune to disease cos frankly there's a lot of romanticism here. Unless we are all going to be nobles most of us would be dead before 30, working most of the time in back breaking conditions and since I'm going to point out how many people want sweet smelling meets, well!!

Personally I want to see the ancient Sumerians, the Doltecs everything that could be the staple of did aliens come here!

It is. But as none of us is going to do this in reality (because, physics), we may as well imagine ourselves to he as privileged and enabled as we can be for our thought excursion. There's no point in imagining being desperate, menial peasants subject to short lives and unpleasant, infection or illness-driven deaths. Acme of Society, I choose youuuuu!

I actually think the exercise in empathy is useful.

What would my life be like if I were nothing but a birthing and weaving vessel?

How important is clean water?

Did helots and other owned people have good lives?

Rather than just imagining wealth and power.

Being rich had its own health risks, toothache, gout, obesity, lead poisoning from tankards and make up, as well as poor contraception.

I know I'm old, but fuck

Absolutely it’s 50 years ago they’ll be doing archeological digs looking for flares and baby cham bottles soon"

Hate to break it to you, but there was a community dig on a nightclub site in Manchester, where they did find a pair of jeans , with some dope in the ticket pocket

I'd like to see Stonehenge and Avebury in operation, as well as Silbury and the long barrows, to see what was going on and how they were used. I would want to visit and return though. Like Terry Pratchett had it, good dentistry and soft toilet paper are fine benefits of civilisation.

You have a perfectly valid point. In the right circumstances, it's very valuable to explore the lives of ordinary people. The main thrust of much of archaeology, as you'll know very well, is trying to reconstruct and understand the entirety of a society's lived experience, from the richest to the poorest. Which is why communal refuse pits are such a treasure trove.

But in the context of a lightweight fab forum thread, where I'm really not getting too deep, and it's a distraction from the rather unsettling experience of contemporary society, it's fun to imagine an ideal. It's like a Marvel movie. 😉
