Disappointing holiday destinations

Where have you been on holiday which was disappointing and why?

Mine was sunnybeach Bulgaria, it is a purpose built tourist town, lots of neon and bars, no old town to explore, probably might have enjoyed it if I was 25 years younger

WHEREVER I LAY MY HAT

I'm not sure I've ever had a disappointing holiday. I can always find amazing things wherever I go... With the exception of 24 hours in Chambery at the end of a ski trip. Essentially I went and it was shut. Longest night and day ever waiting for my flight home

Same, went to Sunnybeach in my 20s. Wouldn't return and that was before it was really popular.

Iceland was OK but not as good as the hype. Everything there is mini - mini glaciers, mini icebergs etc compared to other places in the world. I really can't remember the north side of the island much at all, I guess that explains why people generally stay South.

Costa Rica. I can't distinguish it from the other countries in Central America. I just remember the others more.

Orangutans in Borneo. The country is great. That experience though just felt like an animal park, the trek wasn't really a trek at all. They were just there, hanging around on viewing platforms. There was no work to find them which I like to have with wildlife.

Sunny beach you forgot to mention it’s also bogging golden sands also in Bulgaria was on of our favourite destinations that’s the complete opposite

It's gotta be Ibiza (as a kid) for me. Absolute bore of a holiday. We did have a villa with a pool though, so it made up for the lack of anything to actually do in the area we stayed.

Share El Sheik for the exact same reason.

Also Agadir, Morocco - sea fog until late morning most days, nothing to do except go on a long bus tour to Marrakech - which brew’s is an axing place to stay and the long bus tours from there only go to the Atlas Mountains and beautiful waterfalls you can climb (but probably shouldn’t 😉 ) …because not even they will go to Agadir 🤣

"Haverfordwest. Everything shut at 5. Got a boat to Dublin instead 🤓"

I think you may have misread your tourist guide, or brochure. Haverfordwest has never been a tourist destination.

Admittedly, there are heaps of wonderful tourist destinations within 30mins of there, but no-one, even the town’s staunchiest defenders would de_cribe the town itself as a “holiday destination” .

It has a) a castle and b) coach drivers sometimes dump their tour parties there because they’re moaning that they’ve not seen a shopping centre for five days (not that the shops are in the centre). It makes a token effort based on the above.

It’s like going on holiday to Dunstable, except Dunstable isn’t near a stunning coastline .

Transsexual Transylvania

A private holiday development on the border of the Kruger National Park. My wife and I were invited by her bridesmaid to join her and her friends. She was lovely. They were knuckle dragging Afrikaner nationalists who thought prophet of colour were not human, and furthermore that women shouldn't be outspoken or forward. Boy did a liberal English-speaking couple go down well with them. 🙄

We couldn't wait to leave.

We totally agree, however Morocco was a beautiful place and atmosphere. The beggars weren’t pushy and the shop owners weren’t hard-sell but the grand medina did stink of horse pee along the way”taxi rank” where there all wait for fares. …but so does Central Park, NYC.

I loved India and in another life I'd go there every year. Can't disagree about the poverty, etc but it's not hidden like the resorts I mentioned earlier. It's also generally a low crime country although I know women travelling alone who have had problems.

We took our kids to Port Adventura for about 8 years running and bloody loved it. The beach long, clean and safe. The bars and restaurants friendly - we love Salou …now the kids are grown n flown, we enjoy the big kids playground of PDI for “our time” …with somewhere further afield and exotic for our family trips.

I had really negative experiences in Bodrum when I went 30 years ago. Tried the country again last year - I have been to a lot of places and it is just not for me. "

I skip past Turkey now when looking for holidays 😕

Chams or Socials

"Where have you been on holiday which was disappointing and why?

Mine was sunnybeach Bulgaria, it is a purpose built tourist town, lots of neon and bars, no old town to explore, probably might have enjoyed it if I was 25 years younger"

We loved Sunny Beach - we went in 2019 for our honeymoon & eldest’s 18th. We’re not sand lovers though & spent most of our time exploring - there’s some stunning countryside & we met so many lovely people.

I didn’t like Corfu - not Corfu’s fault though just really bad weather for 1st week then we all got sickness bugs.

Transsexual Transylvania

"India. The savage poverty, destitution, open sewers, food hygiene made it a very sad trip leaving me feeling pretty shamed as to how lucky I am. Regrettably I left 2 weeks early and went to a more conventional, corporate destination to try and recover from the experience. I recommend that everyone who can should go, lovely people, but it won't be a relaxing trip. "

Interesting to read this. I totally agree. I went there on business some years ago, and stayed in a non-tourist destination for 2 weeks. In the course of charity work and military service in South Africa, I thought I'd seen poverty in the townships and rural areas of Natal and Johanbesburg. It didn't compare to what I saw in India! And I never saw racism in Apartheid SA any worse than the way people of a low caste were treated. Quite a sobering experience. 😐
