Just finished reading a few articles on Homosexuality in sport.

There are gay footballers in the Premier League but not openly due to fear of fans backlash.

Would you talk about it with your football mates when Saturday comes and what do you feel can be done?

Apparently, accordingy to a few on here, yer supposed to carry gayness around with you. So no sharing of yer own feelings for fear of upsetting someone.

Yes that sounds very healthy.

At the end of a cracked Rainbow

Personally it makes no difference to me at all so probably wouldn't discuss it during the match or any other time

Tbh, i don't think a lot CAN be done about it! At least, not until they sort out the racism, the violence, the sectarianism! The list could go on!

People not talking about it seems to be the problem. That's why I was keen to see what people thought.

think education is the key thing that needs sorting, everybody should be informed that there is no right or wrong in sexuality only "differences" but all groups, hetros and gays need to respect each others choices and not try to flaunt or push theirs

But there are tools in place to deal with these issues too.

It definitely lies with the fans.

I might be wrong, but the last time I started a thread on honesty and coming out properly, the feeling I got was that mist just wanted me to stay in really. The inconvenience of truth for some is just that: inconvenient. Be it football or otherwise.

I'm not trying to start an argument. Being open about sexuality is hard but shouldn't people let people be professional?

I'm a massive football fan. "Goal" is the same in nearly the same in every language and can be enjoyed by everyone no matter who you are. Just said that key aspects ruin that picture.

Until former France international Olivier Rouyer came out in 2008, Justin Fashanu was still the only professional footballer in the world to disclose that he was gay.

I'm sure there are many more, as there are rugby players, cricketers and so on. Coming out is hard enough for most folk, but being in the public eye must make it even more of a difficult choice to do so.

its an interesting discussion since jason collins became the first male person to come out whilst still active in one of the 4 major american sports this week....

if you get a chance to read the sports illustrated article, please do.. it is fantastically written piece!!

I am sure it will happen, and I don't think the reaction from team mates or people in football will be the issue... it like in the states is going to be the fans, but I don't think any set of fans are going to want to be seen as the intolerant ones....

That's what made me think...and of course Justin Fashanu. If the clubs want to see change, they got to start talking to the fans. Ultimately, a player has to make that bold first step! All the best to that person.

the 1st person to do it I think has to have character beyond reproach... and in that sense jason collins was almost the perfect person...

it is akin to rosa parks being chosen to be the face of the campaign to not give up that seat in alabama.. and be the face of civil rights

If a man can't suck a cock in a swingers club except on bi night in fear of causing outrage, whilst at the same time,a woman is feasting on another ladies gaping minge...

I think we may not be ready for the terraces to warm to the idea their heros take the cock...

Real shame...

Well there's over 540 players registered in the premier league alone.

It's not a case of being ready, it's about support.

Not ready, although the tide is turning.

Acceptance would be more readily received,if reality was less contrived.

Football fans around the country sing homophobic songs to Brighton fans at every match.

Still a long way to go before gay players are accepted I think.

the catch 22 of it all if that you will never find out the reaction until someone does find the strength to come out....

in a way I think it would have to be a high profile international/premiership level type player where you can't question their ability...

because if it someone lower down... you then have the oppotunity to create excuses

yes the terraces use to have their own sense of humour and come up with stuff that was funny... but I don't think the reaction would be anywhere near as nasty as you'd think...

same as if someone came out as a swinger.. for example, yes stan collymore got caught dogging... but most people had a laugh at his expense, I dont think it every got nasty.....

Mainstream society seems to have gradually accepted homosexuality within the entertainment industry and I see no reason why the same outcome will not happen in sports.

But like all situations requiring the acceptance of diversification it takes a combination of familiarity and enlightened thinking to bring about that level of acceptance…..

I’m sure in years to come future generations will look back with incredulity at some of the moronic homophobic attitudes that still exist across some sections of today’s society …

I think it’s quite heartening to see today’s younger generations are relatively at ease openly accepting the diversifications of sexuality and I’m sure over the next few decades this enlightened thinking will evolve further and create a welcome situation where sexuality is not an issue in any walk of life…...

However sadly, there are some countries in the world where this process will take far longer and where homosexuals are still persecuted and live in fear of their lives….!.

So thats my tuppenceworth....

Oh but, if all footy teams were made to wear pink shirts and skimpy lil lycra shorts ..... I'd get my balls out again!

It was good to see Thomas Hitzlsperger come out in January last year. Probably the highest profile ex-player to do so. He came out with the intention of furthering the debate about homosexuality and its acceptance in professional sport.

It was refreshing seeing him talking about it on Soccer AM a couple of weeks ago

I've found that when dogging. You can chat to a group of chaps and they will all be ok, but will say that whilst I look good, they aren't into TG. Then when I bump into them on their own, a lot will prove to be quite into TG.
