Liverpool

I use the M57 a lot for my job and one thing that strikes me as odd is the left hand lane is hardly used, yet the middle and right lane are really heavy with traffic, coming home from work yesterday and I was doing a steady 60mph in the left hand lane, there wasn’t another car in front of me for as far as I could see, yet the middle lane and the right hand lane were quite busy, and pretty much travelling at the same speed as myself, a few times I found myself undertaking because the middle lane traffic was slower, still no one was wanting to move out of those two lanes unless they turned off the motorway.

Does anyone else see this around the country?

Yes very common on the M25 outside of rush hour. Certain parts of the motorway are 4 or even 5 lanes. Yes plenty of drivers are stuck in lane 3, 4 and 5 and will not move into the empty 1st and second lane. Its exacerbated when they drive at 50mph hogging the middle lane and the left lane is clear!

One of those “Police Camera Action” programmes where reporters sit in police cars to film potential road incidents recorded an incident where a male driver was pulled over for middle lane hogging. To be fair, the man did not have English as a first language, neither did he have a UK driving licence, but he insisted that he had driven in the middle lane in a way that implied it was the correct way to drive.

M6 is always the same. Now it’s 4 lanes people just automatically move from the slip road straight to lanes 2 or 3. They think there’s something wrong with being in lane 1

Lane one can become a slip road and peal off leaving the motorway, but I agree with you. The amount of times I have moved into lane two to allow a car on the slip road to join the motorway into lane one, only to almost ram the back of the car because they have crossed from the slip road straight into lane two.

It's the same along the M4. Weird really, as the inside lane, the overtaking lane, and the outside lane all have the same speed limit. I often find myself undertaking to avoid the congestion. It pisses me off when people just amble along the overtaking lane at 50-60mph when there's very little traffic.

I don’t do much motorway driving these days but it’s always been the same.

I used to tow a trailer on the motorway quite a bit, the number of asshole sat in the middle lane used to do my head in, with the trailer I can’t use the outside lane, so it was a question of either sitting behind them until they did go back to the inside lane or make an illegal undertake, knobs!

Solihull and Romford

With respect to the M1, (Coventry to M25)I think it's because the inside lane has been coned off for so long. With the lane widening road works.) Everybody thinks that they might cone it off again at a moments notice.

It's a reflection of low driving standards generally and lack of respect and consideration for anyone but themselves . I see it on the M6, M1 and the M40, when unfortunately on it. I really believe that many don't know what the rules are - getting in to any lane and just driving, seems to be their assumed action. They will hold the outside lane of any road, causing long tailbacks behind

There was that stupid advert about it last year. Anyone sitting in any lane when the inside ones are empty is driving without due care and attention.

In my experience middle lane hoggers tend to be more prevalent when the road is quiet. I struggle to think of many times when the road has been quiet in 1 with 2 dawdling and 3 busy.

I don’t know the M57 - is there something weird about it like lane 1 peels off and what is currently lane 2 becomes the new lane 1 and people are preparing for that?

I've been in the pub with people complaining bitterly and often about idiots on the road driving badly.

Then I've gotten in the car with those same people and watched them pull off shockingly dangerous driving manoeuvres. If you ask them about it they get defensive and blame everyone else driving badly for forcing them to do it.

My only real conclusion is that most people shouldn't be driving.
